Just started looking into Subaru ownership, have £12k budget - what is the best one to go for - any advice welcome.

Personally, get a classic STi or Type R. You'll be able to get the best example and have money left over for insurance and any rainy-day costs.

Depends on what you use the car for.

If it's a weekend toy and you want a raw and exciting rally type car, then go for a pre 2001 STi or Type R (2 door), as suggested above.

If you use the car more and need something a little more refined and newer, then you could get a 2002ish STi (Blob-eye).

If you use the car as an everyday, but quick, family car and prefer a more comfortable drive and less aggressive styling, then look at a 2005-6 WRX, preferably with a Prodrive Pack.
