Default To those thinking about a turbo conversion!

Im 90% of the way through my build and am wondering why i ever started it. Its been a labour of love to say the least. To say more would be its a huge Money pit and big f*** off argument generator with the missus.

I started last year with a 2001 Bug eye 2.0 GX non turbo in Green. Yes i know the worst colour too.

I added a sti spoiler, Wrx rims and a turbo bonnet. Happy enough.

Then i found i had some spare cash so.... it began.

Sti 8 Engine with ppp pack £1750 + Vat
Turbo and ancil's £with engine
Sti 8 intercooler £410 Robbing Gets at a subaru breakers in SHEFFIELD.
Brembo's £400 for front inc discs and pads
Sti Prodrive suspension £350
Fuel Tank from a 2004 sti, and sti fuel pump £200
Sti Clocks £170
FULL CAR LOOM £100
full decat exhaust and prodrive back box £290

total - £3976.25p

£2700 for garage to fit the engine, Since then I have spent over 60 hours replacing bullet connectors with solderand heat shrink, cleaning everything and painting/undersealing it all. And generally being far too geeky with it all. plus £100 in wires, heatshrink, hosing etc.

total now - £6776.25

£170 for subaru to re-code the keys and look at it and say...er we cant touch it its highly modified!

£130 for the materials and stuff to weld up the rear doors and prime the back half of the car.

total now - £7076.25

Tuesday I will hopefully be picking up my full front end off a blob eye to turn it into a blob eye instead of the bug eye look. £410 for bumper, wings, bonnet, grille, airbox and maf, and front doors.

£210 for a pair of blob headlights.

£600 to get the rear end sprayed up WR Blue to match the front half of the car.

Total now £8286.25 plus around £500 in tyres and general bits

so

£8286.25!

Also forgot to mention that Before i started this prison sentance of modification i bought, 4 x Bridgestone potenza re070s for it £450 fitted. I also had to buy longer wheel studs and 7mm wheel spacers so that the brembo's would fit behind wrx wheels.

So to anyone thinking about doing it. its simply not worth it. Ive gone for one of the best specs you could go for out of the box and its still not worth it.

For WRX spec, take a grand of the total cost, and arounf 235bhp top's.

My advice, spend £6k on a mint classic scooby.

What you might have noticed is that... I didnt change the gearbox and diff setup.

305bhp from the ppp sti, the standard gx box and clutch have no problems with this. several hard launch's. several 5th the 3rd changes and heavy power. it tops out around 135mph but it is quick through the gears. the clutch has no sign of wear 2000 miles in. This is where many of you guys said the wrx and sti gearbox's and much stronger. Sti i agree with. but wrx i have to disagree.

To put a sti 6sp in would add on £3500, you will need to change the pedal box and pedal's, the rear diff and hubs, the front diff and hub's, and wire all the electrics in if it has dccd. Plus, sti flywheel, sti clutch etc.

So as it stands now its 90% done. Its going to the bodyshop next week once i get the blob bits fitted. then im going to sell it.

Any ideas on what its worth. 305bhp Gx.

Wish i could say it was worth it in the end.

Is this not a good time to say you could have bought a 2002 STI for £9500?

lol, I didnt mean to offend you mate, i know you love your green! I think i prob would still like mine if i hadnt had 6 months of money spending and grief. Its certainly an unusual colour.

I just hope people will read this and see that its no walk in the park. And it isnt economical to do the conversion.

Every day we see pointless things happening.

I did it because I could.

I have learnt so much from doing this you wouldnt believe. In a sense it is worth it. before this is hadnt done much with car's now...

I replaced the brakes, discs, and calipers, replaced the suspension, Replaced the exhaust, rewired most of the car, learnt how and why components work and what they do. Replaced the turbo and intercooler. done my fair share of bodywork, so that its ready to paint, with a very good standard of prep work.

Yes i know it would have been easier to buy a my03 sti. thats what im saying!

I cant. Just look at it and i think what a waste of time and money. however the sound it makes is sexual!!!!

I miss my range rover, it was practical and a great car to drive everyday.

I bought a xtype jag a couple of weeks ago, so once the scoob is done, its getting sold, the jag is getting sold and im going back to a nice 3.0d hse range rover. if i have enough cash left over i might get myself a classic wrx import.
