Type R version 4/5/6 differences and STI 8
Previously owned an STI 8 which I thought was a fantastic car. I sold it and bought a High powered Evo 6.
I found that the Evo was a superior car out of the box in its handling abilities. It could be chucked about and gave allot more driver feedback than the Impreza.
I have since sold the Evo as the running costs involved were just silly. 4k+ per year not including insurance/ tires or brakes.
I have always loved the look of a 3 door impreza and I set on getting one but I have concerns about engine reliability. Most I have found have anywhere between 40k to 70k miles and an engine rebuild in its history.
Is there something about these engines that fails? I see the oil pump cropping up allot?
Are the differences between the V4/5/6 only cosmetic? engine wise is everything the same?
How about the handling characteristics between these models?
I refer earlier about the Version 8 STI not being as good out of the box as the Evo, how does the type r feel in comparison to an Evo 6?

LOL.... would you believe the irony in this...
I just recieved an email from a lad local to me about his type R, its a 97 version 4. He has it advertised on Pistonheads so i contacted him for an inspection and test drive. (I was told i could get this car for about 6k)
He just replied to my email saying a piston has let go...
I am even more interested in that car now as i could through in a version 8 engine... will it fit??? or a 2.5 from Mr Forrest.

No such thing as a 3 door impreza - 2 door (plus boot), 4 and 5 door only. 3 door is a hatchback like a focus.

stiIV type r is the last pre facelift so it has the older interior like the 22B. RCM modified oil pump is a recommended safeguard. Handling much more like evo 6 and performance as standard on a par. With a 2.5 at say 450/450 it'd be about as fast as anyone would want on the road ( e.g. better power to weight ratio than 997 twin turbo!)

have a look at my spec,API have done all the work to it except the suspension.If you're looking for a type r look for one that has had the engine work done already by a reputable builder,no problem then.

mines a 97 and its actually a version 3 and a half as in it has a v3 bumper and a v4 donnet sti 4 engine i was told that because its an sti they were always a year ahead but some of the first ones off the production line get a bit of a mix and match..
