Had one on my scoob, as im no mechanic my explanation might not be quite upto speed so to speak but, basically you get an after market waste gate which is fitted to car, excess pressure not used by the turbo goes down a fabricated pipe which is on the external wastegate, the pipe runs along side the exhaust and finishes behind the front wheel area, so therefore when you press the loud pedal hard and make full boost the engine does not use all the boost so the excess goes down the screamer pipe via external waste gate and sound fantastic! thinking of getting one for my Evo as they do sound great.
probably get slated for a rubbish explanation!!

Im assuming you would need to have a special downpipe for standard position turbos

It fits in the up pipe ! Also I would assume the turbo would then have to be externally wastegated

on the rotated setups the down pipe can be made to vent the air back into the exhaust system or add a screamer pipe and vent it to atmosphere !!
