Advice wanted , looking at getting a uk turbo
first off
Hello ,i been lurking around here for a while but this is my first post , currently own a impreza sport and its about time to step up
well had my impreza sport for a year now and been looking at getting a turbo as soon as insurance allows me and the time has come
although only on a turbo 2000 and just looking for advice really
not going to ask about fuel economy because when you have a scoob that the last thing that matters .
so i have around £4600 to spend and looking to get a 97 + , milage seems to be pretty high on alot and for this money i think im looking at about 80k being the lowest , what should i be looking out for or concerned about with 80 to 100k miles , ive seen a few people selling with engine rebuilds is this common after certain time or people to tune too much and drive how it should be driven ?
also looking to have a few toys ,exhaust and dump valve and splitter , hoping to get these already am i being optimistic on my budget or should i be waiting a little longer and a slightly bigger budget
also on timing of replacements , cambelt , clutch and turbo. would it worth getting one with a few more miles with these already done ?
also any other things i should look for
all help would be greatly appreciated
thanks graeme

You should be able to get a decent car for that money in a private sale. Well worth looking on here and then PH and AT. Possibly better to look for a standard(ish) engine, unless it's from someone on here or has been tuned by a specialist with a good rep. FSH is essential but high milage is not too much of an issue - if properly looked after they are very reliable cars. Cambelt service can be quite expensive, but you can shop around at specialists rather than dealers.
Hope you get a goodun sorted

Nothing wrong with a green UK turbo - everyone knows green is the least chav colour, and people see you as a gentleman racer rather than a boy racer
You should get a decent later car for your money in a private sale - dealer prices still tend to stay fairly high though - advantages of a UK car are lower insurance, most will have a traceable service history, and they are less likely to be some complete 5hitter thats just arrived at the docks.
OK, they arent quite as powerful as an import of the same age, but are far from slow.
Only thing to be aware of is that they will need the major service at 90K, which is around £600 ( belts need changing ) - if the car is getting close to this mileage then factor this into the price, or check to see if it has already been done at an earlier mileage as some will have been.
I would be wary of UK cars that have needed an engine rebuild as the Impreza engine is very strong and reliable and should easily last 100K+ unless it has been tuned or really hammered ( in which case the clutch, gearbox, suspension etc... could well be pretty ragged as well ).
If I was looking at selling my 98 S plate ( on 73K - 1K since cam belts done ) it would be around the figure you're thinking of spending for a private sale.

My W Reg Uk Turbo is worth 4k I would say, but with 103k.
I have had two Imprezas, both with just over 100k and they have been the most reliable cars I have ever owned.
When I had my current car remapped 2 years ago, it had 96k on the clock but still produced very strong figures of 273bhp/273lbft (@ Powerstation whose rollers are renowned for being conservative) - its been great ever since
The bodywork on mine isn't the best however, due to mileage - so get the lowest mileage you can get for that reason but don't be overly concerned about the mechanicals as they are v strong.
