I had an STi v3 wagon and a 97 GTB for 3 years, just sold the GTB last summer.
Bought the GTB as a winter runaround to leave the STi in the garage. In the end we ended up using the GTB all the time because it was more comfortable, stealthy (compared to STi) and it suited our needs better - kids, dogs, etc.
Bought our one with 93k miles and sold it with 125k miles. Drove it home, put on a new Halfords panel filter and it managed 276 bhp on the rolling road.
In the 3 years only thing that gave any real grief was needing to replace one of the uppipes - had to order myself from Japan. Other parts replaced were 'normal' - battery, radiator, rear struts.
One of my front calipers used to bind sometimes, evetually found a tiny bit of the rubber seal had come off and was causing the problem. Could've done with new seals but not a big job.
We sourced a manual version - travelled 600 miles to get one - didn't see the point of buying a 280 bhp car only to lose a large chunk of power to the auto box.
Other must for us was a stainless exhaust - ours came with an H&S full system - only secondary downpipe and cat were left - passed MOT's fine. Different sound to the Impreza, sounded more like a flat 6 engine.
A lot of the parts are transferrable from the Impreza - brakes, engine parts, suspension parts although if it has the 290mm front discs, the calipers have a different carrier to the Impreza.
Very quick for an estate, my STi v3 would beat it 0-100, but when the GTB's 2nd turbo cuts in the acceleration between 90-130 would leave the STi in it's wake. The VoD (Valley of Death) - lag between first and second turbo takes some getting used to - means poss dropping two gears to overtake to make sure you don't get caught out.
I'd have another GTB tomorrow, very reliable, lots of character, if I'd had the garage space I'd have kept it.

Legacy turbo
Hi!
I traded my Litchfield T25 for a GTB estate a few months ago, and I'm pretty pleased. Have added a Zero Sports exhaust and remapped ECU, giving around 300 BHP
It'll never have the turn-in or agility of an Impreza, but its pretty quick and stable. Would like more lift-off oversteer, so will be working on camber and toe-out.
The brakes are quite good, but lack bite (with my track ads), so I shall be fitting four-pots soon.
Overall, a very nice car, and I'm getting car-jacked considerably less than with my three Imprezas! - I live in Belgium, and that sort of thing tends to happen over here.

Replaced the GTB with a new X5 diesel through work - the RX8 is still the least powerful - but it is the other halfs car
STi has been sat in the garage for nearly 2 years now - hope to get it out this summer.

I bought my 1997 GTB last October. Surprisingly fast compared to the impreza's I had before it. The small turbo gets it off the line quick (no lag) and blimey when the big turbo kicks in they don't half fly. 170MPH top speed (ish)
