Some bad news...

Having owned my M5 for little over a year now.....

Aquaplanned on the M25 last night, and ended up in the center reservation..

Managed to escape with a simple scratch, and no other car was involved...

The driver side wheel is in the boot of my car, with the, hub, disc, calipers and Shock still attached to it...

















....just hope the Insurance will sort this ASAP..and i hope i get good money for it...then possible i can get me another M5 or the RS6...

As long as you're okay, cars can be fixed/replaced

What was the tread on your tyre's like?

 

Im good...cars a rite off....Tyres were good...was using Continentals - though proberly would not trust them again on another car...


I think i just got VERY luckey...i was between 70/75mph...from what i can remember i am sure i had the curise control on....and was in the process of changing from the left lane to the middle and ended up in the 3rd after spining around...

I've done exactly the same thing in a scoob, aquaplaned on the M18 into central reservation at around 70mph. If its raining now on the motorway I'm a crawlin'. At least you are OK and you will take it easy from now on in the wet. As you say everything happens for a reason and I could have had my kids in the back. Also the reason why I will never have Bridgestone tyres ever ever again.

can someone explain what aquaplaining is? i assume something to do with surface water apologies for general stupidity

 

When water gets under all four tyres, at high speed on a motorway it creates a layer between the tyres and the road surface resulting in sweet f all traction/grip.

I got caught out ages ago but survived after a spin, driving along at about 60mph and went under a bridge, as I came out I suddenly hit a patch of water, felt like I hit a wall and car just swerved out of control and went into a spin - not good.

 

ahhh, basically when there is too much water for the tread to deter, almost causing a floating effect

Yep exactly how my Scoob met its demise, foul night weather wise, trundling along a busy M40, saw some cars braking up ahead so thought I'd slow down....

Just as I started to brake we must have hit a big puddle as the next thing I know the car is starting to swerve about. Somehow managed to correct it one way but then lost all grip and went into a slow spin across the motorway Slid backwards into the side of a lorry and ended up on the hard shoulder

So amazed that we only hit one thing. To top it all no one stopped to see if we were ok, not even the lorry

 

Can't believe the lorry didn't stop. But it is like being on an ice rink. Not an experience I ever want to repeat.

I walked out without a scratch..let me rephrase..i ran out after ending up in the 3rd lan of the motorway....looked right and seeing cars approaching towards me was not a plesent thought...

Well..i only renewd my insurance 2 weeks ago, and my premium went up £300 from last year..as my front Bumper was stolen and doors scratched...that was a £8000 claim....

so ui think im ok for this year...though next year i'l be buying myself a Micra.

Looking to get a Focus now for the Wife...to use a a temporary car..

 

Cruise control and wet surface...

My mate did the same thing in an M5 on the autobahn and wrote it off.
I almost span an M3 a few years back in standing water at 40mph!

Big wide tyres and standing water sometimes really dont mix.

The cruise control probably was a major factor.
As standing water and cruise control are not a good combination and can cause cars to spin out. Instead off less power going to the wheels the cars computer sticks more power into the wheels just when you dont need it.

Only use cruise control on a dry road as a rule.
(I dont know how specificaly the M5s electronic brain deals with this situation)

RS6 - lovely sound ...go for it

 

The only thing putting me off a RS6 is the fact that its an Auto...


otherwise fingers crossed for the valuation...

 

AND THAT people is why u buy a BMW lol, i had 3 and still think they are good cars

a compromise, speed and comfort and U get to walk away from almost ALL accidents!!!!

cars a total right off tho, cos my 2000 740i was stolen and hit into a wall with just front panel and wing damage, legs were fine and they still wrote it off......

Cars are much safer to crash than they were. Flipped a Mk3 MR2 (the soft top model) end over end with a few rolls back down the embankment on the M6 once and walked away without a scratch.

 

The m5 is a great car...The engine seems to be ok..but then again i could be wrong...

Insurance company use glass.co.uk for evaluations, so going to login pay and see how much the cars worth..

 

Insurance company comming tommrow....Fingers crossed for payuoiut amount....

Juts trying to decided what car to get next...

 

Done..Sorted....Authorised and cheque should be with me on Monday...

Agreed £13,800...which i thought was a great offer.....

Lucky escape, good thing the BM's are built well.

I've read before of cruise control causing accidents when aquaplaning, agree with above, best switch off in these conditions.
