my god, anyone else palyed with the barrels on the igntion, shocking !
Got a barrel from a scrap yard and didnt have a key, so split it all down and swapped over the parts inside to suit my key,how easy was that, but my concern was, how feable the ignition barrel is, i mean, with a bit of fiddling, you could prob turn the igniton with a fat blade !!
jap crap indeed !
its only the immobilisor stopping our cars from going.........
and there not great

Which is why imports are so bad.. no security onm them so first thing you do is put an alarm/immob on them! Stealing any car without an alarm/immob is easy... not just scoobies!

your missin the point tho, the tumblers have so much play on them, its the worst lock ive ever seen on acar, i only had toswap 3 tumblers to get the ignition barrel out of a legacyuk car to fit my WRX key !
3 tumblers !
theres so much play in them you can usea nice flat blade to turn some of the barrells !!!

i think it goes for most jap locks TBH. the ones on my lexus are seriously good but every other jap i've known has been appalling. thing is, in japan there's little need for them. the car crime rate is quite low and there's a lot of stigma associated with stealing a car so very few people do. i suppose there's more social value there so they're more proud. its also why a lot of the imports come with standard security (unless fitted by the importer).
shame the theiving ******* over here dont have the same mindset really.

you having a laugh? i cant imagine a theif that wouldnt try to screwdriver the lock as a first effort and most that are going after scoobys will know how to get round a cat 1 alarm/immob as that'll be expected (on most ins its a requirement).

ive always thought if i was a criminal, breaking into a car is **** you bend the car back, alarms ****, you could pick the ignition lock so thats ****, but i couldnt even think where to begin on an immobalizer. And if i was going to go to prision id prefer to chance nickin a new scooby then a 10year old one.

i meant even the most stupid theif would try the screwdriver first so putting that info on here wont make a difference. the ones that stand a chance of getting the cars will know all about the barrels, door locks and cat 1 that most will have on top of the usual steering and handbrake/gearlever locks already so, again its not news to them.
now if there was a post about how easy 99% of so-called cat-1's are to get around i could see a fair few going missing as that info isnt readily available unless they've already been to prison.

I used to worry about my scooby being pinched but now I just take a few common sense precautions..parked in the garage at night and be careful where its parked during the day.The rest is up to the insurance company if it dissapears...8 years now without a problem..touch wood

Sod the ignition barrel....look a bit further down the steering column...there's a connector...bridge that (or plug in a new switch) and away you go
Now, what you have to make sure is that your alledged "cat 1" (or CAT2 immobiliser) alarm doesn't tap into those wires that run down the steering column...especially on the ignition switch side of the connector.
Thatcham states that immobiliser connections should be made away from the steering column....guess what lazy installers do?
And some even use scotchlocks - which is just asking for problems and unreliability
