Question

My car's done about 5 000 miles, and I've now got some small rattles. One seems to come from the bottom of the driver's door / seat belt area. The other seems to come from the rear seat belt area, passenger's side.

Chasing rattles is a notoriously difficult thing - anybody else got the same thing and found out the cause? People have mentioned a rattle from the driver's seat, but I don't think it's that.

Rattles very often are in a different place to where the sound is due to the accoustics and background noise in a moving car. My MY99 appeared to have a rattle from the factory fit sunroof. In fact it was the plastic on the rear nearside arm rest. Foam rubber pushed behind cured this irritating rattle. Bit disappointed to hear the new model is blighted with rattles though, thought the 250% stiffer chassis would have helped. You could try sitting in the rear while the car is on the move - make sure someone else drives though !! and listen for any noises there.

Cool

Had a similar rattle on mine, after much time spent on tracing it, found one of the screws on the door seal loose. If you pull the upper aft edge of the door seal away from its carrier (on the door apperture), a steel strip is visible. I think 3-4 screws locate the strip, and one was loose on mine - cured that one, but now others have surfaced!!!!

Hope this helps, took me months to find it,

Tony.

Removed the door cards from both front and rear off-side doors (MY01) glued the plastic grommets that keep the panel on the inner door skin to the plastic mounts on the door card, this stops them moving in the mount when you drive.
Refit the door card as quickly as you can (dont let the glue dry)so each plastic grommet fits back into the door skin easily.
This should cure the rattle coming from near the drivers door once the glue has dried.

Got a rattle from the actual handle on the glovebox. Seems to be the internal catch. Hold the handle open and it stops.

Any ideas?

Take it it and get the dealer to order a new glovebox door.

It seems that such things as rattles are not covered by the warranty.

Hi BT52B - Amazed that they are saying that.... Every other dealer and manufacturer that I've dealt with has been very happy to help weed out rattles etc. it's all part of the customer satisfaction process.

To be honest, the sales guys at Quenbys seem fine, but the service dept seem to be a miserable lot, especially the guy I spoke to on the phone.
They also refuse to do any warranty work on a Saturday! Meaning that I would have to take time off to get it sorted.

Any decent dealer nearby?

I think more to the point, the garages can't make claims to S-UK for rattle fixing. B&C told me they have to cover the cost whenever something like this is looked into.

Cheam fixed a rattle on my old MY99 that I didn't even know about under warranty.

My MY01 is rattle free after 10k touch wood.

Cheers

Hi,

Just take it to Lavender Hill in Enfield.
Dave Medcalfe (service manager) is extremely helpful, and whenever I had rattle-problems on my MY98 he sorted them out under warranty, even in year 2.

Good luck, it's bloody annoying, but it can be fixed!

Had a rattle on my rear seatbelt which was v. annoying. Dealer initially refused to fix "as the belt is functioning ok sir there is nothing wrong, and therefore we cannot fix it under warrenty". I said, "well do they make them to rattle then?" "Well, no but...." at which point I said well if they don't make them to rattle and it rattles, there must be something wrong with it. In the end they agreed to fix and its been ok since.

Drivers seat creaks now though. Still love the car

Thumbs up

For the Herts area Adams have done warrenty work for me on a Saturday - replaced damper - not the smallest of jobs as Saturday is when they have less technicans in.

I get a really irritating rattle coming from the seat belt buckle, caused (I think) by the lap belt pulling on it. Dealer has had one failed Attempt so far to fix (WD40).

Anybody else get this, and did you manage you solve it?

It mainly rattles over bumps. That’s when the seat belt pulls up on the buckle....

I got the Wife to drive while I hunted around in the back for a very quiet vibration - traced to the seat belt carrier (nearside rear--MY01) the small unit attached to the side of the spool tends to be a loose fit - fit a long cable tie around the spool (avoiding the strap path) and tighten - no more rattle. Since this, another spool seams to be starting trouble but I don't know if I can be bothered to take the back seat out again - just open the rear window and listen to the scoobysport philharmonic instead!!!
