One of my friends own's an Evo V1. Would a STI TYPE R have a fighting chance against it ? He appeared to be in third gear before he hit 60mph is this the case for the TYPE R ?

Im 90% set on getting a TYPE R, I just want to find out as much as i can about it.

Thanks

Ross

Dunno, but this is taken from alt.autos.subaru

Subject: Re: The Special Subaru Is Losing Out To The Mighty New EVO 7 ???

It's got 206kw but's it more like 231Kw
1/4 mile in 12.4s
0-60(100Km/h) 4.5secs
Weight 1300Kgs
Basically an Evo killer :-) But admittedly it does skimp on luxuries, air
con, audio etc. But it has been tweaked even further than the Sti. It's only
officially available in Japan<...>

and if your Japanese is up to it: http://210.254.95.20/showroom/imp_sti_ra/

BTW, if you do buy one, let me know how you get on with the importing.

A TypeR would p1ss all over an EVO, unless you are an EVO owner, then you would probably disagree.

A P1 will take apart an Evo, unless the EVO has been played with alot. A Type R is quicker than my P1 to my understanding, so enjoy

At the end of the day it will make very little difference unless you learn to drive the car anywhere near its limits, invest in some good driving courses to enjoy the most from your car.

ROSSC,

Get a Type-R Ross, I've just had mine for a week (MY99 STI Type-R)and it's the most amazing car I have ever been in. Everybody just keeps drooling over it. I would be very surprised if an EVO is any faster!!

Cheers,

Craig.

Question

Care to prove it, rather than reading magazines. Depends on the driver to a large extent, anyway who cares just have what you like.

Cool

Not much in it for both cars, the EVO has better tuning potential but it aint cheap to tune them properly. The EVO is heavier so in standard trim power to weight is in the scoobs favour. It comes down to driver at the end of the day and both are mighty fine cars I prefered a scoob so I brought one.

I would go for the Type R over the Evo, purely because you know that it is doing it's stuff without the help of any electronic chassis wizardry, just good old-fashioned engineering know-how.

Boll*£$S.

Thats all i can say to these threads,MY car is faster than yours,This will beat that,P1's are the best,I lapped a skyline on a track They are S^*t slow etcetcetcetcetec.

This isnt a slagging match about which cars are better,we all enjoy our cars so dont make scoobynet like some of the other bbs's.

Get a car that you are happy with and a car that you will enjoy driving, who's botherd if its quicker than your mates ,as long as you like it.

These sort of "whats quicker" queries are always a little contentious

I've just sold my Type R after a year of fun...Never encountered an Evo on the road, but I imagine they'd be fairly similar performance-wise...Once past 300bhp in a car weighing 1200kgs it gets pretty academic - The road/traffic limit would jinks you can get up to...

Worth mentioning that 1999 Evo 6's fetch around 18 - 20k...And 1999 V5 Type R's seem to be around the 14 - 15k mark...

Oh and the the Scoob sounds about a million times better than the Evo...

That said, I'm still toying with an Evo for my next car...

Pays yer money...

Ross.

"A P1 will take apart an Evo, unless the EVO has been played with alot."

"A TypeR would p1ss all over an EVO"

Until you have driven both cars on the same stretch of road under the same conditions you simply cannot make a judgement on which is faster. When you pass someone or someone passes you on the road and on track its 99% to do with driver ability. Period.

The magazines have done this but then they spout a lot of crap but depending on which one you read, do you really think that 0.3 of a second here or there from 0-100mph makes any difference ? More to the point, if that 0.3 secs clinches the decision of which car you buy then there are shallower lives being led out there than I previously imagined.

I have driven a few scoobs including a P1 and from my experience I would garuantee that I can corner harder (whatever the road surface) & more neutrally, exit a bend faster and out accelerate those cars (with me driving them)... and my evo is standard apart from an exhaust. But then thats just my experience and opinion and its ultimately bound up with my own driving style and abilities. Who cares, and bottom line is that it doesn't make the evo a better car because a car has many many functions and people vary enormously.

Go out and drive both and pick what you like. Whatever you choose you won't be disappointed. Don't get someone else to make a decision for you becuase most people spend a lot of time proving to themselves and others that they own the best/fastest car money can buy.

I've owned two scoobies, the last one being a full scoobysport version. I now own an Evo6. I'm Mr Average when it comes to driving, not like many of the 'excellent drivers' who inhabit this bbs and can spot the slightest difference between their car and car 'x'.

I wanted to own an Evo6, so when the opportunity arose, I bought one. It puts a smile on my face when i drive it, much like the scoob(s) did. I'd like to own a Skyline, so when funds permit one day perhaps I'll achieve that dream.

Guys, these threads are pointless. There's very little difference between the cars. Those differences can only be exploited by excellent drivers, of which there are few on this bbs. Strangely enough, those few never contribute to these thread!

I'm just thankful that I'm able to own these cars.

Jackal, i drove both extensively before buying the P1, the P1 was quicker in my hands than the Evo 6 on the same roads, timed. Simply put the Evo is more twitcher and less trustworthy in my hands with my driving style.

Also, its lighter. Enuff said i prefer it for the noise and handling.

Got to agree with JACKAL up to a point here.

As a proud owner of a Ver.5 STi Type-R, I would love to be totally biased but having driven it, a P1 and an evo round the 'ring' there
is very little to choose between them.

Bottom line is they are ALL brilliant cars and after driving them you'll know which one suits YOU best.

The hard bit is the choice... the easy bit is enjoying it!!!!

In a direct comparison with my MY94 WRX which has been slightly tweaked (330 bhp ) the STi V Type R was as quick upto about 90 mph, when my car started to pull away from it. Not bad seems the Type R was around 50 horses down on mine. So in the real world (sub 100mph speeds) the Type R is QUICK and nearly rear wheel type driving style is FUN.

Don't know if the figures quoted near the top of this thread of for a type R but a bog standard evo is quicker than those figures, an RS more so, so a modded one......

Totally agree with Jackal,
Buy the car that you want ,not because its faster than your mates by 0.3 of a second.
Ive had a modified wrx and loved it to bits, rapid, good cornering and brilliant sounding engine(with HKs hyper)
But i wanted something a little less common(there are loads of scoobs near me,most in silver)so i got a metallic blue Evo 4.
There are no other evo 4's near me and dark blue is a rare colour.

I enjoy the performance and the cornering ability, most of all i love the looks ,ok it sounds like a hairdryer, but who cares? Not me.

These threads always cause tension ,so lets cut the B$££$*(t about whos car is faster, all our cars are great!!
