Hi Dan,
I very much doubt that you will be able to compress the dampers by hand (no matter how much you weigh).. i couldnt with mine (but then im not even close to 18st so no comparisons can be made)
When i first installed mine it felt like i was gonna fold the bonnet in half before they would move so i took them back off again and thought the same as you. What i then did was put them under my computer chair (between the floor and the bottom of the chair) and lowered the gas-strut in that... the dampers then compressed as they should which free'd them up enough for me to be comfortable just being brave and closing the bonnet with them on.
They work perfect now.
Try it (if u can).. I found it was just about being brave the first time but completely understand how you feel cos i didnt wanna damage my bonnet either. It is also possible that they dont work i guess... so try the chair trick before u try ur bonnet (its cheaper!)
