Well built car, look out for the double Vanos system (BMW`s version of VVT) it is known to fail and will usually cost you an engine.
Nice to drive and handel well, can be scary in the wet.

One word
VANOS
Investigate it before you buy
Steve

Seconded - Quite twitchy in the wet - seen alot of E36 M3s in hedges backwards.

Vanos failure doesn't usally damage an engine, but its not driveable, £1K to fix though (one of the secretaries here as an M Coupe and is on her third unit!)

I have owned the M3, M3 evo & a uk turbo.

The M3(286bhp) caused me much less grief. I loved all 3 cars but the trouble now is finding a minter & if you do it will be usually at a premium!

As mentioned VANOS problem (in the evo's) is the one to look out for.

In a straight line I found the M3 quicker than my uk turbo (both standard)

Handling was not as good as the scoob & in the wet it was even worse. I spent a few quid on the handling for the bm & the transfomation was amazing.

Both are great cars but different at the same time.

Good luck

bmw's weak point is wet roads.... on the dry a bmw can give subaru a decent run and i think the bmw e36 is more fun to drive but the rain will do u lol

i was drving my bmw e38 328i sport in the pitch black, in the pouring rain, uphill and turning a blind left at about 70mph lol and lost the back end and crashed it lol most fun i ever had lol i take the same corner in the same conditions in the subaru and it does feel alot safer cos of the 4wd.

if u do get m3 id avoid the seq gearbox and find a manual

main thing is tho that the bmw isn't hardcore, its a compromise its got some speed and some comfort and the subaru was built for just rally lol

like everyone else said

VANOS.

normally 2K to sort out and they tend to go at 70K miles.

If you do buy one obviously look for one with the vanos sorted.

A beautiful car though.

I had a left hook E30 which handled like a dream. I still miss the back end fun.

EVO magazine done a nice article to rate the M cars... the E36 M3 came in last and they even had trouble getting someone to donate their car as they are commonly known as the worst of the M3's...

That said, one of the writers got a GT spec E36 to turn into a track car. Maybe you just need to spend a lot of money on one to get the most out of it.

I'd take the slightly older E34 M5 at a similar price or stretch to an E39 M5 if it were me.

Only my humble opinion but good luck finding a good one .
