Default Wheel Offset

I took my wheel off today 2 hav a look at the offset and this is what I came up with.

17X7 1/2 JJ 53 I'm guessing the 53 is the offset.

Now my tyres are 225/45/17 and the garage have said the wheels are off a newarege scooby. Mine is a 97 STI. Basically before I spend loads on new alloys and tyers can I get away with the present offset of 53 and reduce the tyers to 205/45 or would it look stupid

205 may look a little stretched on a 7 1/2" rim.

Alternative and more common size for classics is 215/40/17.

56.1 I assume is the maximum offset measured in mm but this is wholely dependent on wheel design and spoke clearance.
Some wheels may have the correct offset that would appear to fit a Subaru but the spoke design doesn't clear the caliper/suspension etc.

If your current tyres don't catch and you don't mind the speedo being out a little justy leave them on.

Well the moment the tyres are catching so it looks like I may need to buy some new alloys.

For classics if you find a wheel you like go for a 7x17 with 215/40/17(more choice of tyre then 205/45/17) tyre or you could go for 18's with 215/35/18's
