Default Removed DV

Ok so i removed my dump valve (recirc) last night.. took car for a bit of a spin and all seemed well. Not noticed much difference, and i can only hear the turbo stalling if I have the bonnet open and my head basically resting on the turbo

Any idea how to make it a little more audiable?

Standard td04 turbo, slanty TMIC (soon to change to a 98 wrx), standard airbox and pipework.

Cheers

An induction kit will make the dump valve more audible

Do you mean you replaced your re-circ with a vent to atmosphere one... or removed it completely and are running without a dump valve completely?

Cheers,

I removed the dump valve completely and am running with no DV at all. Seen a few threads recently saying that the main drawback is that the bearings on the turbo get a hammering, but that the td04/5 can take the abuse.. even if it does shorten the turbo's life its no problem as im looking to upgrade at some point.

Sorry if ididn't make myself clear..

Please no replies saying it will shorten the life of my turbo, i know and don't really give a toss I just have to fiddle and fancied a go to see if theres any difference in driving feel

If the turbo lets go, it depends how it goes about it. I'd be more worried about the compressor shedding bits of blade, I think. Though I've also read that the TD04/TD05 are tough as old boots, relatively.

I removed the recirc dump valve, so there was no sound before. I now get a quiet flutter when engine is reved and throttle shut as expected, although its barely audiable

Was thinking about this last night... Being an auto the throttle isn't **** when shifting gear, so the dump valve/recirc valve wouldn't operate under normal conditions anyhow? Only if reved in Neutral? Or coming off the throttle completely and slowing down from boost?

Don't know why yours is quiet, obvioulsy the more boost you are running and the higher the airflow you have when you lift off, the more noise you get, also you will always get more with a small turbo than a big one, with my hairdryer I have to lift over over about 2 seconds to stop a very loud audible surge when I had the recirc valve blocked off for testing (confirmed it was leaking!).

If your changing TMIC to square, get the 99/00 one as it has better cooling capability than the 97/98, although you need the flange mount DV.

What about recording a "Whoosshing..." sound, then playing it back through your stereo at full volume?

But a suging compressor does not sound anything like a wooshing (go and listen to a late 80's Sport Quattro)

Anyway, can you tell any difference in throttle response ?, is lag reduced at all ?

The square intercooler has been offered free of charge.. so its an upgrade from what I currntly run, not going to argue at those prices..

Not noticed much off a difference yet but thats because the turbo to IC pipe needs replacing as its a bit fooked.. hence need for a new ic (or pipe at least).

Will give an update once all fitted, probably around xmas.. work sux

No probably not best to keep buy the td04 off me To be honest its a bit of a high miler so would be sold with genuine description In all likely hood it would end up on some project like a lawn mower or something.. I have issues with fidling like that
