Auto Express always slate PIAA's in their annual bulb test. The problem is, the bulbs that always seem to 'win' their approval are so yellow. I mean, who wants a yellow bulb? On a previous car I owned, I had PIAA Xtreme white as dipped beam, and those new '80%' brighter Philips bulbs for my high beam, and both were very similar with regards to the amount of light they shon on a dark road!

Yellow bulb beam is crap.

To be legal a bulb has to be 55/60W or less (so Xenon HID is legal as its 35W even though its much brighter - go figure) I use the 'Ring red' as I can get them very cheap (around a tenner for a pair of H4 - where that price comes from I know not), very happy with the (nice white light) result...

I had the Phillips +30 on my main beam. Just swapped them to the phillips 100w.

Have to say, the +30 shone further into the distance, whereas these 100w ones do not go as far, but light up more of the road at a closer distance.

Personally, i prefer the +30 and will be going back.

I like to know what is ahead when i have warp-speed on command.

Question

Interesting article, Pete.

It doesn't go far enough though. H7 bulbs? Not every car uses them so to be useful, they ought to have done H4 and H1 too.

Last year, the H4 Halfords 50% uprated were top, made by GE, but the GE megalights didn't do so well. I bought my youngest some of the Halfords ones on BOGOF, and they are very good.

I have a strong feeling it's pot luck as the quality control on the production lines seems a bit hit and miss.

Harvey Smith can give you an excellent insight into which bulbs are good, bad and ugly. It makes interesting reading.

I always found the uprated bulbs not to last as long as standard ones.

Come on Pete...come clean...you love the blue bulbs which increase visability by about -50% and streetcred by 75%

You know what?

My Impreza is now 7 1/2 years old and has the original main bulbs in still!!

The sidelights, however, had about 100 in each side!!

WHY??
