sorry to sound thick but what's the difference between the GEMS remap at £300 and the Ecutec at £650?
I guess Ecutec is a replacement module?

ecutek is a reflash of the standard 99- ecu, price includes the licence for the software which is the expensive bit but stays with the ecu, future reflashes are a lot cheaper. The GEMS is a replacement ecu that costs £1,395.00 ex VAT then it needs mapped as well which is the 300 quid on simons website

thanks for the reply

so the cheapest remap is £650? don't suppose you know the bhp/ torque figures on a 04 wrx afterwards?

cheers

Can Simon or someone with a bit more indepth knowlege briefly post up the key differences between EcuTeck,Gems and Apexi.

Under the impression that EcuTeck Utilises the existing ECU
And that Gems and Apexi both replace the ECU.
I know with Apexi you get the hand held thingy (technical term)
I have also heard that Apexi is often the best over Gems for a road car.

Can someone clear all this up for me and give me a quick list of the pros and cons.

Thanks
Steve

apexi is probably the best for a modified road car, ecutek is just a remap of standard ecu which is good but cant be the same as a standalone ecu,the gems is developed for motorsport and has add ons like anti lag and launch control has issues in everyday running/idle from what ive heard but its best to talk to andy forrest or simon aka JGM,another option is the simtec which uses map based readings (maf is a weak point on imprezas) and has the antilag and launch control but is slightly more expensive than the apexi/ecutek but cheaper than the gems

Thanks for that.
So YES the MAF is often a weak point so I can see the sense in that.
What exactly is a ´´map based reading´´. IS the MAF not used in this instance to generate the reading for the air coming in? Is a map based reading a predetermined value set up when the car is mapped?
Excuse my ignorance
Thanks
Steve

The manifold absolute pressure measurement is used to meter fuel. The amount of fuel required is directly related to the mass of air entering the engine. The mass of air is proportional to the air density, which is proportional to the absolute pressure and inversely proportional to the absolute temperature. ( ideal gas law.) Engine speed determines the frequency, or rate, at which air mass is leaving the intake manifold and entering the cylinders.but as i said simon or andyF are your best bet for a proper breakdown of how it all works,it is a benefit getting rid of the maf as a failed/failing maf is responsible for my engine problems

Thanks for explaining that
Agree getting ´rid´ of the MAF is a good idea (especialy those chocolate later classic ones). Basicaly the air part of the air fuel equasion is sourced from another source - as you have described above.
I now understand that map doesnt mean map as in mapping but manifold absolute pressure

I take it you are running simtec with good results.
Cheers
Steve

Yes.

The 04 WRX is fitted with a 280bhp turbo give or take a bit.. therefore depending on the supporting mods upto 280bhp..
Although peak power is not everything and I always try and tune a car to give good throttle response and drivability, as well as power and torque.

What are the costs involved?

had my 04wrx mapped by simon in october well impressed with the transformation although i do not know bhp/torque output, my advise would be dont go chasing figures get it mapped and have a very driveable car with a good power output.

also noticed it does about 50-60 miles extra per tank of fuel now.

i can definatly recommend simon mapping your car,he knows his stuff and is very thourough
