I was at my girlfreinds, its 2:30am, went outside for a ciggy (cant smoke in the house) when i heard a noise from the street oposite. It was a car rolling down the road towards me with the engine off, then the young lad turn into an ally behind the houses then his mates ran over and jumped in also....My first thought was to run over, then i remembered the recent stabbing of a guy who chase some theives so i went in and phoned the police but they arrived to late (as usual).
Did i do right? would you have confronted them?

Did right, not your car, out numbered, good call.
From someone who's been in casualty after a hijacking, take a second to think before acting. Sorry state of affairs but stuff the car our physical/mental well being is too precious.
Hope they die after smashing into a tree, scum of the earth.

Like others have said you've definitely done the right thing. If it had been your pride and joy the scum were taking then maybe tackling them would be an option as otherwise (due to the police's inability to investigate any crime except speeding) you're never going to see it again. Still even then if you're well insured and have protected no claims etc. it may be best to just let them get on with it.
No car is really worth getting stabbed for is it? Why do you think the police always arrive so late to these incidents?
Regards,
tiggers

Tend to agree with the others BUT if you had shouted and screamed at them from a distance they may have thought twice and legged it? Very unlikely that you would have been in any danger from them and you would want someone to have done something if it had been your car? Easy to say after the event though!

I don't disagree with what you did - probably sensible, but I would have at least shouted at them, and maybe confronted them - I just tend to think, what would I want someone to do if they saw my car being broken into.
Before anyone goes on about how stupid it is to confront them - well, people have to stand up and be counted - maybe that's what's up with society these days??? *Sulli steps down from soapbox*

I didnt shout at them because i didnt want to draw any attention to myself, especially outside my girlfreinds house because then they know where she lives.
Ive done that before and ended up with a brick through my house and car window, hence me running in like a scaredy cat!

Or if you had a semi automatic paintball gun by at hand round off a couple of hundred dents in their head for good measure, then run in side like a big girl when they rushed you, and make fun of them through the letter box, wile you called the police
Na just kiddin, you did the right thing, there are some many scum bags about today, if they are nasty enough to steel cars you goto think what else are they nasty enough to do.
Life is cheep to scumbags

Nathan L, i said the police was late as usual because they always are but you said "well how quick could they get there", the point is that there is a police station not 2 minutes from my girlfreinds house.

I heard a brilliant story the other day about a bloke that rang the police cause his car was being stolen only to be told they were really busy and would get to him asap. Fearing that the thieves would get away he rang the police again and said don't rush I've shot him. They got 3 cars there in 2 mins. LOL I might try it if that happens to me. You did the right thing mate.

late arrival of the police reminds me of an incident near here a couple of months ago.
An elderly lady saw a house across from hers being burgled, so she calls the police. The police tell her there are no patrol cars available so they can't attend. So she says she'll drive down to the police station and give one of the policeman a lift.
Ten minutes later she returns in her car with the policeman as a passenger who goes over the road and arrests the burglar.
you have to larf, eh?

Sideways - My mate tried a similar stunt and got charged for wasting police time. His car was stolen from a shopping centre car park while he watched. He called the police to be told they were too busy. He called back about 10 seconds later screaming that he just realised that his child was in the car. The police closed down most of Belfast in about 10 minutes, recovered the car but no sign of the child and then discovered that he didn't actually have any children - Doh!!

Mr.Manc, curious to know what you would have done if it was your motor. It's one of those things that we all think about, fair enough just going in and calling plod if somebody else's car but what if it's yours. Do you confront them or just let them take it and hope you get it back later?
