Just curious, wanna keep mine in tip top condition so this year as it has not been used much I thought about laying it up for the winter and sorning it, just a couple of things I'm concerned about is my tyres and battery, I know the Scoob is 4 wheel drive and hey it should be out in the Ice and snow but I have tried to sell her recently with no luck, so if I'm gonna keep her I just want to keep her looking nice.

Yep mine goes in garage for winter and I use my Golf or Polo if I need to drive anywere. Even in summer it only gets used now and then....bit of a waste really.

I put mine on axle stands and bought one of those 12 volt trickle chargers to keep the battery healthy.

I just wish I could jack the ride height up a bit as last year when we had more than 15cms I she was doubling up as a snow plough

Winter won't do much harm the salt and grit will though so make sure all the vunerable spots are protected That includes stone chips and chassis and clean the grime off regular!

Colin, it's a 4 wheel drive rally based 4 door saloon. Enjoy the bloody thing in weather it's best suited to, mile European winters! I honestly don't think you'll get that much more money for your car when you sell it if you keep it wrapped up all winter. It's not a Ferrari! I think I've cleaned my car 3 times in the 14 months I've owned it

Exactly. Why buy a car that shows it's strengths in the crap weather then only use it in nice weather? If you're gonna do that, then buy a proper summer sports car.

It's akin to buying a top condition ferrari and putting it away for the summer and nice weather and driving it in the crappy winter

It's a car not a Bear. It doesn't need to hibernate. Isn't one of the reason in having 4wd is that it's better come wet/slippy roads?

When I had my Focus RS there were blokes who were only putting 700miles per year on there's. Never driven in the wet etc. Mad

LOL at this. This is like asking if you put your bikini to the back of the cupboard for summer! It's a 4WD rally replica (of sorts). You'd be better laying it up for summer where its 4WD system is usually just extra weight and drive drag and where hot temperatures kill the intake temps.

Use it all year round rain or shine, work and play. Why on earth buy a reliable performance saloon that doesn't mind inclement weather one little bit just to stick it in the garage half the year? It's to be used - these are tough cars, not some Italian exotica.

Bought mine as a daily driver as my other motors too thirsty.. Course when it really snows orr buckets down and floods.. I take the propper 4x4 out and tow people outa ditches/floodwater

I bought mine for the sole purpose of being used year round and in the winter. Snow tires are going on in a few weeks.

I bought an MX5 for summer use I get the train to work everday so would only use mine at the weekends anyway so it may as well go to bed for winter. I never bought it to use everyday, it's just a toy and you don't play with the same toy everyday.

Plus parking it up allows me to carry out major mods/work that need doing. People buy cars for different reasons.......

Exactly. Mine is now also a toy and I want my toy to last a long time.

Getting it covered in salt and muck will make it turn into a scabby, rusty old toy and I dont want that to happen

Driving it in really bad weather also increases the risk that it will be crashed into and that would be a very bad thing

I can afford to run 2 cars, so I do. It may not be a Ferrari, but its as close as I'll ever get.

Why would you lay it up in the winter? If your not going to keep it for the rest of your life why bother, its not a classic car and not likely to suffer if you keep it clean, its just a waste of money sat in your garage depreciating. Get the thing out and use it.

I disagree. I used mine for a few months in winter when I first got it and it started to go rusty around the edges with all the salt (North East Scotland). Mine is 14 years old and has reached the bottom depreciation wise for its condition.

I just dont understand why people continue to criticise the way people use or dont use their cars. They're our cars, we dont want to use them in winter, end of. Live and let live as they say

Use mine all year round. Weather never really gets that bad this far south anyway. Just give it a clean and polish most weeks to keep it tidy.

The idea of laying it up over winter reminds me a bit of the VW guys, where a load of the show and shine cars are trailored to shows even in the height of summer, and they spend the day polishing their calipers and picking stones out their tyres

I agree, that is just **** but if they're happy......

Mine gets polished once a year, maybe a hoover aswell if its lucky. Not interested in show and shine at all, just keeping her looking good as long as possible.

Why not lay it up? it's my car I'll do what I want with it. Just like you do with yours. I am lucky enough to be able to keep mine as a toy. It's no show and shine machine it gets used as it should. Its a hobby/toy not a means of everyday transport.

When I get a another Impreza it will be a fine day car. Maybe during nice weather in the winter but raining and bad weather it will be living in the garage. Last year my Impreza did 6K mostly due to being tucked away in the winter and using the misses oil burner for long haul trips.

If I were using the car every day, I'd get a newage of some sort. Personally, I want to look after my P1 and keep it tip top.

As for my daily work commute and current stead - a 1995 Mk3 Golf Driver with 140K and still going strong. Never missed a beat in the 6+ years its been in the family.

Not sure on the axle stand business due to damaging the sills but taking the weight off the suspension sounds like a good idea. I've heard some leave the tank empty so fuel doesn't go stale. Oil change when its ready to come out again and I would get some cheapo wheels and tyres for it to sit on so it doesn't bugger the tyres sat in one place.

One thing though. IIRC Imprezas have this issue of oil starvation caused by the oil pump getting clogged. Is this more likely if left standing about?

I was speaking to a Lancia Integrale specialist and he recommended using them at least once a fortnight due to the belts going hard if not in use.

Yes, I know 'each to their own'... but why the hell buy a car whose virtue is that it's a PRACTICAL fast saloon - something you can blast down the country lanes in of a weekend, but will also do the work slog, and you can pop the back seats down and do the B&Q run in - when you only plan to use it on sunny days? That's what an Elise is for. A Scooby's for life - they're a working man's, blue-collar supercar. Just seems totally daft keeping one for fair weather driving. Use it for everything, it'll take it. I used to know someone with a golf R32 which he bought brand new and used a cheap Corsa for the daily (long) commute - WHY?
