New Car Price Problem..

New Car Price Problem..
I have just been to a local subaru dealer (South England) to ask about the new STI.
I have a WRX 2006 that I bought in December last year (demo car - cost £18000) - about 2k off 'new' list price.
The trade in value now was £11k !!
Whats more - the reason given for this was a NEW UK spec import car exactly the same as mine could be got for 14k, so why would a punter buy a one year old car, instead of new. He said he would have to sell my car lower than this, otherwise noone would buy it.
Agreed I have done 18k miles but wasnt really expecting this.
Anybody have any thoughts?. Should I ditch the local UK dealer (and buy from the likes of motorpoint) knowing full well the local dealer will still provide the warranty ?
What if subaru UK suddenly lower new car prices next year ?
It seems too risky...

Yes you should ditch the local dealer. They all love to fleece you twice, once when you buy the car at an inflated price and secondly when you come to trade it in.
Buy from a car supermarket and sell privately.

Sell it private and buy a new shape STI from someone like allbransnew
I just paid £15k for a brand new WRX (hawkeye shape) with the longer cyprus warranty , so £11k does sound a little low for trade in but thats what happens when you try to sell something 1 year after you bought it!

Wow, just looked at allbrandsnew
They have an STI (last years model) at around 22k, and the new wrx at 15k
But my worry is that the 'official' UK price next year will drop to compete. So all those people who have ordered a 'offical' UK STI for 27k may be fleeced by subaru UK themselves
P.S. I'm in no desperate rush to change my car. Normally I do that when it reaches 70k miles

The UK price will drop a little because you can always haggle a little with the dealer, where as allbrands new are pretty much fixed. Its prety sure bet that all brands new are always going to be quite a bit cheaper.

I recently read somewhere that you have to be able to prove to Subaru UK that your order for the car to the importer pre-dates the date on which the importer ordered the car from the supplier in Cyprus.
For example - you order the car from the importer on 1 December but if the car is already ordered from the Cypriot supplier by the importer, the 3 year Subaru UK warranty is not valid and you only get 12 months from the date the car was supplied by the Cypriot dealer to the importer which, allowing for shipping, can reduce your warranty to 11 or even 10 months or even less.
However if you order the car from the importer on 1 December and they order the car from their Cypriot supplier on 2 December, Subaru UK will honour the 3 year warranty.

You need to sell private. You will of course take a hit on a car that is only 11 months old but you are in a no win situation with EU WRX cars supplied as cheap as they are.
I bought EU in 05 sold the car 2 months ago and only lost three grand from purchase price. Now ready to order STI hatch.
I have to say it is hard work getting some of the dealers to even reply to e-mails especially when i am ready to part with such a lot of money to buy the new STI. I decided last night i am no longer going to chase responces from these guys, I will sit and wait for the likes of the car supermarkets to set prices and order through them. It does however make you wonder what opportunities some dealers are missing.
Expect Subaru UK to struggle again to match EU supplied prices. Whilst the savings won't be as great as over the past few years I am sure the smarter buyers will stick with EU. My past two cars have given me no issues from the point of sale, through warranty and also at resale. I struggle to see why anyone over the past two years would consider UK.
Now isn't that a bit sad

Solution is simple, private sale and bypass IM and their intransigent, stuck in 1996 business model. Either that or keep taking £10K hits when you buy a car every 3 years.
Even an importer like Litchfield will offer you better value than them, never mind the bargains that supermarkets can offer.

Quite pleasantly surprised with mine - bought new 06 WRX from Motorpoint in April 2006 for £15,700, now worth £11,900 as a trade in.
Just don't work it out to depreciation per month

Follow my golden rule:
"Never ever ever ever buy a brand new car, find one that is about 2.5 years old and still in warranty".
This advice is free and will save you lots and lots of money.

What I have always done. Usually buy cars a year or two old, keep them for 2-3 years then change. I'm hoping to keep my current one for a few more years though, so will probably not get as much back as I usually do.

Pls explain "longer Cyprus warranty".

I bought mine from allbrandsnew and would highly recommend them to anyone. Massive saving on Subaru UK ( i've been ripped off by them before so learnt my lesson ) Got a MY07 WRX with a sunroof ( How rare ) in Urban Grey for £14750 OTR with 12mths Tax this March. Warranty wise they need your V5 and a copy of your license to register the car with IM and get a UK service book, this did take a couple of months.
At the same time dealers were asking £18k for an older car with 10,000 miles.
It was a no brainer for me, just had to but cat 1 ( £325 ) and locking nuts (£25), didn't want a tracker and some insurance companies aren't worried about that.

I bought private for 7k in February, PX'ed for £5400 4 months later..... hmmm.
Cos no one wanted to buy my car.
Willing to take the hit on the new car, bought from Motorpoint, made a saving, not planning to sell for 3 years.
The only difference with the warranties is...
Transmission is 5 years not 3 years as UK are
All claims have to be authorised by the fixing dealer, through the origin dealer, Liaco in this case. So can take a little longer.
