Default OIL TEMP

Wonder if anyone can give some advice concerning oil temps.I have an sti ra,and when driveing ie on motorway, the oil temp drops to around 70 degrees, which i am thinking is maybe not hot enough to be useing the higher end of the rev range, when at a standstill it only goes to just above 80 to 85 degrees, which is about wright, but when you drive faster the oil temp drops back to 70 deg,it does have a front mount oil cooler, just concerned that the oil temp is cooling down to much when driveing faster and maybe not offering the wright protection, any help apreciated, cheers.

Mine is about 90 when properly warm (ie, at speed on the motorway). Sure your gauge is reading right?

Does your car have an aftermarket air to oil cooler? Has it always done this, or has it just started to happen?

Have owned the car for around three months, has allways been like this,99% sure the gauge is working correctly, and yes the the front mount oil cooler is an aftermarket one.Not 100% sure that it is a air to oil cooler, but would think it is.

If you've got a front mounted oil cooler, that will be an air to oil cooler. Is it quite small about 6" across?? It sounds like it doesn't have a thermostat on the oil cooler and that isn't a good thing. I'm no expert, but I think you can buy thermostats that are built in to a sandwich plate that goes between the oil filter and the engine. It really depends how that one is plumbed in.

Take some pictures and post em on here.

Have a look to see if the oil cooler pipes go to a plate between the engine and the oil cooler. If it does, then you should be able to fit a thermostat sandwich plate something like this (which opens at 80C).

MOCAL - SANDWICH BLOCK & THERMO 1/2BSP - M-OTSP-1

Thanks for your help on this mate,in your opinion is 70 deg c to cool to offer the wright protection as it does not drop below this temp?,that is the lowest it will go,as said earlier ranges from 70 to 85 no lower no higher,if you think these oil temps are to low then will have to look in too geting a therostat, cheers Chris.

I would say 70C is too cold to offer the best protection on your motor. I don't race mine until the temperature is past 80C. May be the situation could be helped by running thinner oil, but that's probably not a solution.

I see your based in Banstead. I would give Greenwood Racing a shout, as there more of a specialist than your local garage. Lots of good feedback for them on here.

Your oil should be around 80 C plus and as the temps drop for winter so the oil temp will drop a few degrees more.
Classics run cooler than New Age, typically 84-86 C and New Age 90 C or a little more.
Consider a thermostat from Mocal/Think Automotive or even consider removing the oil cooler.
There are lots of cars around running oil coolers that do not need them.

You deffo need a thermostat regulated oil cooler. This is not just to control the temperature the oil ends up at. Perhaps more importantly, without a stat, it will take significantly longer for the oil temps to get there in the first place. Not good.

Driving hard with 45C oil will damage your engine. You need to get it sorted ASAP.
