forgot to mention, it runs fine when first started up for about the first few minutes , reving freely , and boosting fine, thought it might of been limp mode but doesnt that limit you to about 4.5k revs?

Nah there's no CEL lights on at the moment, i have just reset Ecu over the weekend though so may come on over the next few days, i origionaly thought the problem was the fuel pump and have replaced the origional with a walbro pump, any ideas how much a MAF will set me back and how easy it is to fit?

Give it a good clean first before you buy a new un - but i'd say your looking at about £90, depending on what model! Might worth just buying one as a spare anyway, not good to drive it with a goosed MAF!!

Sounds like your car have been into limp mode, hence the reduced boost and power, yes it could be the MAF, and it wont give a cel or show up in a ecu diag test
A quick way of testing if its really knackered is to unplug the maf while the car is idling, if it stalls then it could be ok, if the engine continues to run the ecu have learned to cope with the missing signal
saying that, even though it stalls it might still be on its way out
replace the maf to be on the safe side, costs around 80£ very easy to install
reset the ecu after it has been replaced

what would you recomend using to clean it? as it is obviously very sensitive?
also has anyone got a walbro fuel pump? had mine in 3 days anmd it is incredibly noisey, high pitched whine, audible from about 20 meters away its really bad

Driving on boost with a dodgy MAF = Engine rebuild!
Any specialist will be able to diagnose in 2 mins and replace there and then. Problem solved, circa £80
Much cheaper than 2k plus for a rebuild!
The Walbro is quite noisy, again a specialist will soon tell you if anything irregular is going on. Keep the car off boost, potential fueling problems can spell disaster if the car isn't driven gently untill they are rectified.

MY99 MAF can't really be cleaned. It's a different type of technology to the earlier cars. Thin film, versus hot wire.
Seconded - get the car to a specialist for a diagnostic.
