My Image Uploader - threat of vanishing (ish) :-(
#1
Hello...
It would seem that my image uploader *may* be under threat of vanishing...here's the story...
My current hosting package only allows me to transfer 1Gb of data per month, with additional amounts of data being charged at £12+VAT per Gb per month.
Big deal you say... well, you chaps have transfered 2.1Gb of data this month already!!!!!! (some 47,000 hits since Jan 1st)
So... as much as I love you I won't pay the extra costs as it where, there are a couple of options I think...
1. Upgrade the hosting package (can be done to support 360Gb transfer per year, at a price (about £700 or so)
2. Turn it off!
3. Do a little upgrade (supports 7.5Gb a month) but we'll probably go over that.
4. Find another place to host it.
So, what do you reckon?
If anyone can provide hosting and domain name transfer to support a fair amount of traffic let me know!
tis ironic, 6 months ago I could do it for nowt but jobs have changed since then!

A question of clarification:
- is it used/advertised by/to Scoobynet users only? (I must admit I did put a couple of pics in to reference in a UBB-based digital photography forum post I recently made)
-
If so, can't you/we swing it that its part of the Scoobynet infrastructure and we might be able to direct some incoming funds (banner ads etc) to pay for its hosting and bandwidth?
If not, would it be worth winding down the max size of pics posted to reduce the download amount (I presume you have no storage problems..or will that break next) - or do you do this anyway

That sounds like a good idea... re: the clarification points, here are the answers...
1. Advertised by ScoobyNet... yes and no, it isn't officially advertised but there is a post by Cookie in the Gallery that explains how to upload pictures (a permanent post at the top of the gallery)
2. Used only by ScoobyNet... it would seem not, like you say, people have used it for other things... it would also seem that a couple of other BBS's may have used it, although it is mainly scoobynet that is generating the traffic.
3. Scoobynet infrastructure... that would be a good idea, I was thinking of having a word with Si, maybe get the site logo as a banner or something... If this was the case (and it could be funded) we can really go to town on it and do what you guys really want rather than what I think you want ;-)
4. File size... it does restrict file size anyway, that's not the problem though, the problem is the repeated downloading of those files. Re: disk space, the current hosting package has 100Mb of space but it can be extended. The old (secret.lab6.com) one (at my old workplace) had about 15Gb of space
suggestions then peeps?

Hi Matt!
Can you not have a word with Simon and get your uploader integrated into the whole ScoobyNet package. Eg the S/N homepage would have a link to the uploader and that itself was running alongside ScoobyNet on the server? Obviously I don't know the ins and outs such as traffic/data and space on the server etc, but maybe worth speaking to Si? It is such a useful feature it would be a shame to lose it as many people have no other way of getting images on the net
Cheers

I would be sorry to see it go as it is the only one I know how to use
As has already been said, might be worth talking to SDB or babber.

Drop me a line with how much bandwidth you use, how much space you need, what platform and what you currently are paying for it. May be able to assist.
