Quick question about the bulbs.

What to go for Super Whites or Plasma Blues, and are the 80/80W too much for the wiring.

Greenking - not so much a case of can the wiring handle it, but whether it's road legal or not. 60/55W is the highest rating for road legal use in the UK. Anything above won't be 'E' marked. It's a small point, but if your insurance company is being picky...

Just spoken to the very helpful chap (David I assume?) at DRmotorsport, so I'm gonna order my 60/55w H4 and side light super whites

Note, another consideration is how blue the blue could be, as legality is in the balance here... hence my end choice of white, as the boys in blue do keep an eye on me, as there have been a lot of impreza thiefts in the area recently, too their credit, and if they recognise its me driving now, they dont pull me over (any more).

Cheers, Alex

Dr Evil

Can you give me the number for DBMotorsport, and tell me how much the said bulbs cost, as they sound like the best legal solution.

Cheers!

Question

Will the supawhite be better than the Halfords Xenon I got the other day - I couldn't tell the difference from the original lights!

Still soon I'll be trying the supawhite side lights for a laugh, it's only money afterall.

Boring Chris L,

Go for Superwhite over the blues if you want ultimately better performance. Blue tints are a bit boy racer and obviosuly, every scooby owner on here spends half his/her life slagging off boy racers!

Floyd, the super whites are far superior to the halford ones, I know someone that has PIAA bulbs already and they look white rather than orange! probably cos they are 5watt instead 2.5watt...

Mungo - DRMotorsport's number 01506-872430

PIAA are about to bring out (January I hear) two new bulbs which rival HID. There are the new Plasma FX bulbs and also Platinum Super Whites. They can be bought as 55/60w bulbs with output rated at over 100w. Haven't got prices yet but over £100 I'd guess.

Hi Guys,

The Super Whites are available as 60/55w (with an output of 110/100w) and as 80/80w (135/115w). Only the 60/55w has the E-mark approval.

Plasma Blues do give off a strong blue tint, and are also available as 60/55w and 80/80w as above, but none are E-marked.

Available soon will be Platinum Super Whites as 60/55w (130/120w) and 80/80w (150/150w). None are E-marked. And Plasma FX 60/55w (110/100w) and 80/80w (135/115) again none are E-marked. These bulbs have been in the PIAA brochure for a year now, but haven't yet been released, prices of them are still to be announced but they will be a fair bit more expensive. Whether they are closer to HID I don't know, but I don't think I'd like to try 150/150w next to my Imprezas plastic reflectors.

My personal preference is the Super Whites 60/55w, and the matching side light bulbs. A brighter white light with good output and also E-mark approval, they are also a good bit cheaper than the others.

Cool

Just had my PIAA 55/60w H4 super whites and sidelights and they are great. I did have (I think) 80/100w but I wanted to be legal. Well worth the extra cash. I now have PIAA in all the front lights...blinding with 130w spots!

Thanks for all the replies,

I think I'll order the 60/55w super whites, and also the matching side ones, give the boys in blue as little reason as possible to pull me over.

Is there a big problem with cops checking headlamp bulbs anyway?

Greenking - I think it has more to do with insurance. If you did choose to use high wattage bulbs then you are technically running an illegal car. If you were involved in an accident and the other party said something along the lines of 'I was dazzled by his lights' etc and they checked your bulbs, then your insurance would be invalid.

The police do on occassions pull people over for using fog lights, so I suppose it is possible they might do the same if they thought your lights were dazzling other road users.

Wink

Of course, if youre careful and only shunt people in broad daylight then you need not worry!!!!

Some lights are better than no lights, look at all these tossers driving round with no brake lights or working indicators!

I have had PIAA Super Ceramic bulbs in 100/150W in my car for over a year with NO problems whatsoever.

I used the PIAA uprated wiring kit that they can supply (REALLY easy to fit!!) as the standard wiring is not up to the job, and now have 560W of total output with the Scoobysport driving light kit as well!!!!!!!!

I have had NOBODY 'flash' or otherwise get irate because of the output at all.

The main legal issue that the police will have is if you are dazzling someone else with your lights, and as I have said, that hasn't happened with this set-up at all. In fact, I managed to get a car that had been stolen from me back a few years ago PURELY because I said in court that the car had uprated bulbs and the bloke who 'un-wittingly' bought the car did not know this; and the police were very helpful and co-operative in my legal presentation.

The main advantage is phenomenal brightness and light spread in even the darkest of conditions. I have had a few people in the car say "f**k me, they're bright!" when I've switched them on (Hi P.C.) such is the effect.

Rob.

Hi guys

Just to let you know the new PIAA'S are in the Demon Tweeks 2001 motorsports catalogue.

It states the platinum super whites are E marked.
60/55w-130/120w = £34.80 each + vat
80/80w-150/150w = £37.70 each + vat

Also plasma FX no E mark.

60/55w-110/100w = £58.21 pair + vat
80/80w-135/115w = £61.29 pair + vat

Hope this helps.
I've just got some ewc-1's and they are grrreat.

See ya

Sunil,
Using Pete's computer...

I got my loom from Prodrive, but Beechdale Subaru in Derby can get them as well due to their rally car being PIAA sponsored. Phone no. 01332-372555, and ask for Dave Wood.

BTW, after me saying that I've had no problems with them, a bulb blows the very next day... X-Files??
