Question Bugeye WRX quick??

Hi guys,

I should be able to buy another scooby soon and after owning an L reg WRX and an M reg WRX, with the cash i have i really want either a facelifted classic or at best a Bugeye.

My L reg WRX was fully decatted and was very quick. My M reg was standard apart from 17's and a Magnex oval backbox. My L reg was obviously quicker even though the M reg has the bigger turbo.

Now i've seen a 51 Plate Bugeye WRX that is in very good nick. Will it seem a lot slower than my old classics or will there not be much difference? One of the first mods i'll do is an exhaust system but that won't be for a while.I would get another classic but there isn't any decent examples near me and i have a trade in.I'm a bit of a power freak and always liked saying a i had a WRX instead of a UK.

Wish i had the cash for a P1 or an STI

surely if you have the money for a bug eye, you could afford a classic sti? i will be in a very similar position to you, do i get a nice classic sti, or save up a bit and get a bug eye, would have to be an sti from what i've read though!

Yeah the STI's are so much nicer cars.

TBH i think i'm a bit put off by the quicker models as they are more likely to have been thrashed? The last thing i need is an engine rebulid.

I want a 'newer' type of car too hence the bug.

You'll find the Bugeye Wrx carrys more weight than your classic but it can still move in standard trim, mine did the standing qtr at 14.10 (in stantard trim) which i didn't think was bad.
However i soon got tired of the lack of pull it had in the higher gears and subsequently modded it and had it remapped and now its a different car.

To Some it up i find MY02 WRX Comfy, solid, quick (after map) and no rattle plastics.

I sold my classic which was running just short of 320bhp and bought a Bug.It is obviously much much slower than the classic but a few mods and a remap should see it running the same sort of power.
They are not to everyones taste but i do prefer it..

i have a classic typeR,my dad has an 02 reg bug completely standard, typeR is ballistically quick, great handling, bug is still nippy but better on fuel, quieter and more refined,if i go anywhere long distance or dads gone abroad and left his car at mine then i usually find myself in the bug and the sti doesnt get used, strange that.

my lardy ol bug WRX has 440 ish BHP so its no slouch.

Few mods required fror a decent drive in these though, a simple decat and remap will transform the car

I've got a Honda S2000 and had a bit of a tussle with a 52 plate bugeye Sti. I was cery suprised when I started gaining on him! So a WRX would not be that quick to be honest. Of course my S was slower that the V2 Sti classic I had!

Interesting guys!

Thanks for all the reply's Just one more question though. When on the motorway my WRX's were revving at 4.5K when doing 80mph.

Is the gearing in the later models better than this? It used to drive me nuts

I lived in a 98 classic for 9 years only mods being an SS backbox and ITG filter, it was quick and it did me for 170000 miles, yes thats miles, I bought a WRX Bug 2001 wagon with PPP, the previopus owner said he really noticed the difference when he had the PPP put on and the fuel consumption was better, not as far as i'm concerned, it feels slower, drinks more juice and just doesn't feel as raw as the classic.

I posted this up a while back and everyone said get it re-mapped, which i will do when the finances allow me, I personally think it's a much better built car than the classic but it just isn't rewarding enough to drive even with 265bhp god knows how poor it was beforehand, for the record it was 1 owner has FSH and had only done 36K so it's not like it had been shabbily treated.

Do a search and there is plenty to read on the subject with pro's and con's re the remap.

I am certainly no "anti Bugeye" as I had one for 12 months.
After 3 months of bugeye ownership I realised I had made a mistake and after 6 months decided to sell up to get an STI.
It took another 6 months to sell it.
If you like the rawness of your import then stick with a classic as the bugeye in standard trim is sluggish and boring.

Have you done work to your car lately as you have 440 bhp now but your profile say's your running a TD05

What have you got in it now for that sort of power

My advice would be to test drive a Bugeye, It'll be like marmite you'll love it or hate it
