Default From westfield to sti. but which one. Help!

Hi guys, i am a total newby to subaru. I hope to get plenty of advice from you guys now and in the future. This looks like a fantastic forum btw.

My situation:
Due to the recent floods my much loved westfield(0-60 in 4.5 secs) has been written off. This has freed up approximatly £6000 for me.

I am looking to buy an impreza sti which will give me similar performance to my late westfield. I have been looking on the scoobynet classified section, and e-blag, etc...

It seems i can only get imports at this money? (Quite like the sti type ra or the limited edition colin mcrae?)

What do you guys recommend?

thanks
Menno

Hello and welcome

An Impreza is quite a different machine to a Westfield - you have much more weight, more grip, a totally different power delivery, and you're much less exposed and close to the road. I had both for a while.

All STIs prior to the new shape car (which arrived for 2001) are imports, unless you count the P1 (which will be well over budget). For £6k you should be able to pick up a decent STI version 4 or thereabouts, which is around 280bhp and certainly won't feel slow after your Westy.

The McRae is a UK model from '96, but only 208 bhp as it has the standard UK-spec engine. Most will have been tuned, of course, but an STI (especially a Type-RA with its short ratio gearbox and lighter weight) is still a much more powerful and 'raw' machine.

Doubt if in budjet but best buys are JDM's IIRC ver4 is 1998 version 5-6 1999-2000 Ver 5 & 6's are considered best

Perhaps more closely suited to your old cars handling would be type R or Type RA with DCCD,

IMHO

Don't worry, it's one of the most confusing car model ranges ever made! I've owned them for 6 years and am still discovering new details

JDM = Japanese Domestic Market - ie. a car sold in Japan, and only available elsewhere as a grey import.

The STI Type R (introduced in 98 as a variant of the STI version 4) is a 2 door saloon, with a short ratio gearbox and various other changes. There's a really good description (including the Type RA and also DCCD) at Eta Tauri Site Impreza Reference - Japanese Specification
