Default Cold air feed

Thinking of installing a cold air feed to MY2003 STi, before fitting a RCM induction kit. I've seen a few done by cutting a hole in the fog light cover and routing the feed from there. Does anyone who's done this suffer from water working it's way up the pipe on rainy days or when driving through puddles ?

If not it's fiting a Chargespeed or Zerosports brake duct and using that instead of cutting holes in the foglight cover.

Any other suggestions

I once did research on this for my Honda and found AEM can supply a valve which prevents water from going up the pipe.

I've got a cold air feed from the foglamp area and have had no problems with water

You will also need to make a heatshield for max effect

By the time I'd posted, they'd stated they had a newer car, principles are the same though

this is mine:

I have had no problems at all with water ingress - even when I had this directly connected to the std Air Box.

Now I have a 89mm ID tube going from this to the inner arch - about 30cm in length to provide the CAI with plenty of cold air.

3 1/2 min job to fit it.

oh and I put some mesh on it to stop wildlife going in - it may also help act as a barrier for rain/water though.

Has anyone ever actually tried putting a temperature probe near the airbox to see if there's actually anything to be gained by such a modification?

there is one there as std measuring intake temp (this is at the MAF)

I have also installed one measuring at the throttle body - after it has been through the turbo and IC.

Both show a substantial drop from a little thought going into where the air is coming from and how cool it is.

I used a holesaw to cut through the fog cover on my 03, then attached the cold air feed, even after all this heavy rain, never seen a drop of water getting in the engine bay!!

Just dug out the stats on my cold air feed:

Charge temps (measured at throttle body) on cruise:
- std air box and snorkle = ambient +6C
- std air box and cold air feed = ambient + 3C
- std air box and cold air feed and throttle coolant re-route = ambient +2C
- APS kit with cold air feed from bumper & throttle coolant reroute = ambient +0C

Water spray drops the charge temp around 2C on cruise but have no measurement of WOT effect.

see my view my scooby for the chargespped root although technically isn't not my car anymore as i have just sold her!)

Never had probs with water working it way up though did have to turn round once due to the road being a foot deep in water - me thinks that wouldn't have done the car any good!

re-routing the coolant feed that goes to the throttle body.

There are two hoses on there that I clamped/removed and then joined together to stop hot coolant being circulated around the throttle body and heating up the air.

I have an 02 STI with a Hyperflow induction kit (one of the green cylindrical ones) inside the wing:

The foglight cover remains intact, with no hole cut. When the car was being mapped by Paul Blamire it was on the rollers for well over an hour, during which the intake air temp rose by a total of about 4oC above ambient.

Obviously the filter is NOT protected if fording deep water, but is protected from any rain or spray - I've driven through some very heavy rain with no performance issues.
