Default Question about oil filter

Posted on behalf of a mate.

A mate has a classic with a full decat Manex exhaust sytem. He has informed me that he is going to do an oil change and the oil filter that he has removed is a smaller than standard one and the new Subaru supplied filter is too big as it fouls the exhaust.
Can anyone elaborate or is he talking rubbish.

The Oil Filters went smaller a few years ago - he hasn't acquired old stock has he, by any chance?

The only way the exhaust would foul the filter is if the exhaust manifold (header - bloody Americanism!) has been changed. The original, larger filters had plenty of clearance with the standard manifold plus the heat shielding around it.
There is some debate as to why Subaru started to use the small filter - it's probably 1.5 pence cheaper? For instance, the Purolator filter for the Impreza is still the larger version and works fine.
