Default Restricted Import how do i tell?

HI all, just a quickie, just bought my STI type R and must of asked the owner a million question apart from is the car still restricted!! DOH

The clocks go up until 110 MPH and equlivent KM apart from doing a high speed run how else would i know if the car has been de-restricted, What would happen if it was, would a rev limiter occur or something? What would happen to the speedo needle?

Sorry peeps must sound real dumb for asking this question but im NOT ive got letters after my name and all that!! lol.

Cheers

From what youve said; its still restricted to 180kph. There are two ways to convert the early speedometers. You either fit a 1.6:1 reduction gear into the speedo drive cable (and cover kph with mph on the face), or you simply change the face for one which reads up to about 110mph (this appears to be what you have described). When you fit the reduction gear to the speedometer you effectively remove the restriction, although all you really do is shift it from 180kph to 180mph..... As you only appear to have a replaced/recaliberated speedometer face, then your car will still be restricted to 180kph/112mph.

Im confused lol...... I think ill do a highspeed run to find out for sure, is it expensive to de-restrict? Would of thought it had already been done wsince its been in the uk since new!

Im not keen on high speed antics and i purley bought this car for its sprinting capabilities but it would be nice to 'know' that it can do 150mph

Thanks for replys

you`ll soon know its restricted, 112 mph and the local GSI nova will be going past you as you pop pop splutter at 112 and go no further !!

Shouldn't they all get de-restricted once in the UK? Km's per hour to miles per hour is a requirement of SVA, non?

They only need an accurate speedometer reading miles per hour, the restriction has no bearing on this.

Dont be confused, you can tell from your speedometer face! If it reads to 112mph or thereabout then it is still restricted (or if it reads 180kph). If the speedometer reads to 180mph or thereabouts then it has been de-restricted (as you put it).

180kph it reeds so i guess it still needs freeing up - will know for sure once i try a high speed run.

How easy is it to do? how much will it cost?

Easy, I got one off eBay for £40ish. It just connects to the back of the speedometer. Pull the clocks out, pull out the speedo cable, fit the device and refit the cable. 15 min?

As has been said, your kph scale on the clocks becomes mph i.e. 180mph being the highest reading.

Sounds good, what happens to the trip meter and milage readings?

Would i have to note down my total milage in kph then start counting from once i do the change?

If you have the 'forrester dash' (Ver 4 onwards) yours is an electronic fed speedo and the mechanical cable solution parts listed above in a couple of posts will not fit, let alone work.

My old Type R had a small electronic box that was spliced into the feed fron the gearbox sensor. Unfortunately, I no longer have the import paperwork saying who did it.

But it was similar to this one: delimiting
Do search and shop around though.

Once it is in place your 180kmh reading changes to 180mph and you will have trouble reaching the cut out again.

If you have it fitted, they should give you a certificate stating the KM's at the time, and how that will affect the overall mileage, as the car will start clocking up the numbers slower going forward.

HEY just had a top speed moment and car would fly off the clock and keep reving so im guessing im delimited but with 180kph clock.

One less expense i guess.

Will try and borrow a sat nav to see how accurate the clock is

Re-mapping it will remove the limiter, it is advisable too, more power and better fuel economy, oh and less chance of blowing your engine up

On a version 4, that will mean a replacement ECU though.

Apexi seems to be the best value at the moment.

I had a Link ecu and that also worked quite well, but a bit more expensive I think.

Plenty of mappers out there.

im still limited and have been for the 2 and a half years ive owned the car, you dont need to go above that speed and i rarely touch the top speed now, the car will benefit from not be delimited, and you will probably find that the car will sell on for more because it wont have been thrashed to within an inch of its life. these cars are not made for top speed so why do you want to go 150 mph???

The car has been in uk since new, and has a fsh with every MOT etc....

I was surprised last night as i thought i would go for it, the needle went off the speedo and travelled toward the start of the speed scale. The car was still pulling hard and no sign of coughs or spluttering which would of indicated a restriction according to this forum.

So my car appears to be unrestricted but still has kph as the primary clock, i dont mind too much and i agree ive got little interest in traveling 150mhp as a type r is all about initial accelleration.
