Do a search on this, there's masses of threads on it and they nearly always end up in a slanging match!

It is strange as alot of the the STi TypeR's are actually quicker out of the box.. But the P1 is a special model that people recognise although most people think they are some kind of 400bhp beast from standard lol.

The reasons why P1s control a premium is that they were sold in limited numbers in the UK and are a UK registerd car. Prodrive developed the car for our roads / market too. THe P1 WR then improved things further.
A good well maintained Type R will generally go for and from £7k (v4) to 12-13k for a version 6 ltd.
Both are very capable cars and have pros and cons so if you're on the market for one try them both.

I'm sure various versions of the STI / Type R hade different power ratings. EG. the first STI had 260PS moving up to the maximum agreed limit (japan) of 280ps. I'm not aware of the P1 having any more or less power than the equivalent R of that time.

No, the P1 doesn't have the short ratio gearbox. It also has the UK dashboard and lights and Prodrive suspension. I think Mike Wood described it as mechanically an STI V 4 door but built into a 2 door shell; IIRC there are one or two 4 door P1 prototypes rolling around.

The 276 bhp issue mentioned earlier is a homologation thing so that cars could be entered into a japanese touring car type championship.
Hence, skylines and supra's also miraculousley have 276bhp
get a P1, if you want to keep it for a long time (rarity) and a TypeR if you want to modify it (cheaper and not such a sacrilige to cut it up).

I have had the luck to drive both off these cars when i was buying, and in the end i went for the type r mostly because i could'nt find a clean P1. The DCCD was also a big factor in the decision. I'm very happy with my type r and have now got a 2.5 transplanted! and all under the price of the same aged and millage P1. One piece of advice if buying is if you're doing alot of motorway millage the type r gearbox is'nt suited as the gearing is crazy low!

Subaru Impreza FAQ
PS I saw the White P1!
Throughout 1999, there were strong rumours that the UK market was at long last going to receive a Japanese specification Impreza, with improved levels of overall performance. A two door white Impreza Turbo running on 17 inch gold alloys and Prodrive number plates had been spotted several times. September 22nd 1999, Autocar magazine run a scoop showing this very same white car, along with a glowing write-up, and an estimated price tag of £30k. Despite having a few inconsistencies (eg 2.2 litre engine with 350bhp!), the article answered many of the questions enthusiasts across the country had been asking for many weeks. The white car was actually a prototype for the forthcoming UK spec Impreza supercar. Based on the 2 door Impreza body shell (but without the wide arches of the 22B)., the car had been developed by Prodrive during the previous year in conjunction with Fuji Heavy Industries and Subaru Tecnica International in Japan. It had been designed from day 1 to be Subaru UK’s response to both ‘grey imports’ and the phenomenal Mitsubishi EVO 6, which had been receiving rave reviews all year long. "Shock Subaru Announcement - New UK Spec 280 PS Impreza Turbo" was the title of the press release, which ran to a full 9 pages. This car was to be called the Prodrive P1 (Prodrive One), would have the full 280PS (276bhp) of the Japanese spec cars and carried a full 3 year warranty with support from all Subaru UK dealers. This astonishing car had been painstakingly developed, and not only met all requirements necessary for full European Type Approval, but also set class-leading standards for both ride and handling. The main features of the car are as follows:
The Japanese spec WRX STi is also available as the 2-door coupe "Type R", which has the same equipment as a STi saloon plus driver-controlled diffs, and an intercooler water spray, but no ABS!.
The "Type RA" (Race Altered) is a lighter weight car with some options deleted and deemed the most suitable model in the range as the basis for a rally car. Generally they come without air conditioning, electric windows or radio, but these are available from the options list, and fitted to many road cars. The RA comes with a closed deck block, shorter gearing than standard (150mph at 8,000 rpm!), and rally style vent(s)/flap(s) on the roof.

- Top speed of 155mph, 0-60 in 4.6 seconds
- Special Hella driving lamps
- Specially Designed "Titanium" 10-spoke O.Z. 17 x 7 alloy wheels
- High Ratio Steering Rack
- Ventilated front and rear brakes
- Shorter throw "Quickshift" gearchange
- 4 Channel ABS brakes
- Rear wiper
- Specially designed aerodynamically superior front and rear spoilers
- Category 1 alarm/immobiliser, and RAC Trackstar tracking system
- Air Conditioning

I had the choice of a P1 or Type-R.
I chose the P1 simply as i wanted to keep myself from modding too much and knew i'd do that if i bought a Type-R.....don't ask me why. I just thought the P1 was worth keeping standard more than a Jap equivilent.
Being a UK i figured it would be easier to sell on to Joe Public down the street who knows nowt about how to properly run a Jap car.
I decided if i was considering a P1, only a Type-R V6 would suffice the other way, due to the front lip, but the gearing bugged me....so i'd have to get a V-Limited, which command an even bigger premium over the P1. Something which i wasn't wanting to pay.
It's personal preference at the end of the day and how much(and how modded) you can get the car for.
