Now it's all relative, see??

I would suspect that 98% of Subaru Owners do NOT come on SN - and I would like to wager that they all use the Oil Subaru say in their handbooks (and therefore what I say).

So, you seem to be speaking with forked tongue

To answer the original question....

Subaru recommend 5W/30 or 5W/40 synthetic. I would buy a known brand despite what Pete says, as I think my car's worth spending an extra tenner a year on its lifeblood. You don't need to go mad with racing spec stuff, but brands like Millers are highly regarded and don't cost the earth. Silkolene are often recommended, but Castrol Magnatec isn't.

One odd thing as my local dealer uses fully synthetic oil, which isn't specified in the handbook. Hmmmm.....

COMMA is well known and respected by those who know whats what.

AND, the viscosity depends upon driving conditions and temperature ranges, I think Subaru actually recommend 10W-40 SEMI.

I would simply stick with what the maker of your car states, they built the thing, designed the thing and have tested the thing.

Pete, the manual for your Classic may state 10W/40 semi, but my Newage states "5W/30 is preferred". Fully or semi synth is not stated, but "Energy conserving SL or SJ" is. A higher grade is only recommended in hot weather.

Yes, I was sad enough to fish out my owners manual!

Worst case scenario - fully synthetic is unnecessary and you spend a few quid more each year.

Or should I say, "Worst case scenario - it is necessary and your engine doesn't last as long".

So, a couple of options :

Comma semi synth as per Pete.

Silkolene Pro S 5w40 ester based fully synthetic.

Nowt wrong with COMMA Oils ..........

Top Quality at a proper price

Like I said, for those that know -

.... the others can go and get shafted with their 'Slikolene Rally Xtra Protection Triple Action Ester Polymide Fully Synthetic Sports Turbo API BS Spec Ultra Super-Duper' only £40 for 4 Litres!

I thought the expensive Oils were sold in 4 Litre Cartons??

That way they make you pay £9:99 for the other Litre you need?

That's true of Mobil 1. Most irritating (if you buy the stuff).

Comma semi synth is to API SL and matches the Subaru requirements (it being strictly not relevant if its full or semi-synth - the requirements are the requirements).

Comma (Welcome to the Comma Oil & Chemicals Ltd. Website) also markets Mobil1 in the UK.

Mobil1 is however API SM, and personally I would use it.
