Mine is on 80,000 miles and with regular Oil changes I fully expect to throw it in the bin with the rest of the car!
Only those who abuse their cars and who cannot drive properly need to worry about Subaru's not lasting .........

As already said and like everything else mechanical, depends on how it's treated..!
Having mechanical sympathy and proper maintenance, even if something is used hard, will prolong the life, a bit like Pete..
My VF35 (originally s/h with 20k on it) has been running a peak of ~1.5bar and holding 1.3bar @ over 6k RPM for 12,000miles/12 months, no problem..!

i bought my PPP Wrx @ 27k miles on it, all was sweet until i wanted to see how fast it would go flat out, i was flatout (in a safe and legal place) for about 2 minutes, i melted the cat and fused the ceramic bits in the turbo after only 600 miles! A lesson learened and a £1400 bill to replace
Ive taken steps to make sure i dont do it again, was totaly my fault although i did think a few minutes at that speed would be safe .

That's terrible for a standard car (albeit PPP)..!
That's precisely the kind of scenario Prodrive claim PPP can handle and the reason the mapping is so conservative (to leaving in large safety margins)..!
Obviously, there are rouge cars with faults from the factory, which is probably the cause in you case, but a standard car should be more than capable of sustained high speed runs..!
I hope you didn't pay anything towards the repair..!
Lol, Andy wondered why I keep getting flashed..
