Hi

Firstly I know that this should be in the tyre section, but...... i need an answer quicly.....!

I'm thinking of going for 205, 40 , 17's..!

Does anyone use them? is the ride a lot harsher than with 45 profile rubber? is the handling improvement worth the harshness? If you know what i mean......

Has anyone tried both..........????

Any help very much appreciated...!!!

Thanks

James

Hi James

I run 215/40 x 18 P7000's on mine - the Sti rides a little more harsh but overall i think its an improvement - trouble is that the P7000 is a cr@p tyre!

And if you want comfy - buy a Mondeo!

Mondeo--- Agreed

The tyres i'm getting are Michelin Pilot Sports...

I think sacrificing comfort may be the way to go... ..!

Cool

Russ,
P7000 a crap tyre?? I run 215/35/18's and I think they are fantastic. I've been through all the usuals, P-zeros, Yokos etc..and these are my favourites. What pressures are you running? I run 28psi all round! What made you go for 40's instead of 35's? The 35's are much closer to the original rolling radius 608mm as against the 630mm your car is running. If you want comfy...get a mondeo

Hi James,

Why do you want to go for 40's, I know you can pick them up cheaper, but are you thinking of these as advantageous for grip. You'll be changing the rolling radius which in turn will make the speedo more innacurate, increase acceleration slightly and reduce top end! Comfort wise there probably isn't too much in it at this level. My 35's are only slightly less comfy on 18's than my old 45/17's!! There aren't any particular reasons why you couldn't use this size other than the fact you'll be altering the rolling radius. The standard car uses a 612mm rolling radius. A car with 205/45/17 has a 616mm rr while a car with 205/40/17 has 595.8mm rr.

Cheers Nito

I'm not too fussed about the r.r.! Do they give more grip? or just better handling, etc, with less sidewall flex?

James,

Most people who run 17 inch wheels use 215/40 tyres which keeps the rolling radius the same size as the original 205/50 on a 16 inch wheel(give or take a bit for differences in tyre makes). It can make the car more prone to tramlining and gives less cushioning for the wheel which for me has cost me a new set of wheels due to hitting a pothole at speed. The other side of the coin in that turn in response is sharper and the car looks better - which is what it's all about if most people are honest.

Thumbs up

I just upgraded from the standard 16s to 215/40/17 Toyos, and the car actually rides better (std MY00). It is slightly bumpy over almost smooth tarmac (difficult to find any of this anyway) but anything rougher and it seems to cushion out the rough edges.

Hi Nito

The car came with 40's on it - i was told that 35's weren't available. Seems every tyre dealer contradicts another! Saying they're "crap" is possible a bit strong but i find i rip them apart in about 12000 miles - i honestly don't think they're up to it. And wet weather grip is a bit marginal.

I know, I know, if i want tyres to last 20000 miles, buy a Mondeo!

So if i've increased the rolling diameter, does my speedo read slow?

I do hope not! Or i'm very very scared at how fast i've gone in it!

James - Go for the ones that aid turn in around A-Class mercedes! Will you have the new boots on for the Clang'nBall?

Regards all

Russ
