As above pretty much, see i love my scoob but miss rear wheel drive. I know with gtr's they can be modified to become rwd at the flick of a switch, pretty sure this is unachievable with scoobs so what are the options for permenant rwd and has anyone done this? Steve

Is nearly possible with type r and type ra with the close ratio gearbox, Via the manual DCCD controller, not 100% rear wheel drive but roughly 32/68 split which is dammit near enough.

The chassis of the Impreza is designed to be fwd / 4wd, and although it can be done, the dynamics are all wrong. The Impreza does benefit from front end grip; bear in mind that with the standard chassis setup the do grip well but they handle like sh*t- although many mistake grip for handling.

I agree it sounds like fun- but in reality I'm not sure your rear diff would be happy for too long.

MRT in Australia do a conversion kit for the centre diff so you can make it rwd, and there's a fair amount of info on NASIOC.com

Why not sell the Impreza and buy an M3 though?

Everything you love about your subaru will probably be ruined if it was possible to convert it to rwd.

I'm sure I've read about it being done for drifting, and I should imagine it involved replacing the centre diff.

Its easy to convert to RWD, there are expensive converters that repalce the centre diff, or you can strip and weld a stock one to do it, or better still take the box out and remove all the unnecesary front drive stuff if you don't want to convert back, however you will then be into a big raft of changes to get the handling right, although just removing the rear ARB would be a big help!

In the 1993 Autocar handling award the UK Impreza turbo was beaten by a Mondeo - nuff said!

its easy to convert the dccd box to fully rear wheel drive (£250ish) on my type R
and as to why?..simple, when you dont need 4 wheel (ie: for most of your driving life) you just switch it off, and save mpg, also if you want you can have loads of rear wheel fun, or back to normal with the turn of a dial.
also we can use full diff locks, for snow/heavy gravel.....try one there mental.
i normally drive with the 1st orange light on, seems to suit my style.

Its something I've thought about doing..

Strip the box, remove the front diff.. weld up the drive shaft holes, remove the drive shafts, wouldnt be hard to makeup some stub axles from the original shafts...

Would be sooooooo much more fun!

That is the OEM DCCD controller you are talking about, max split is approx 70% to rear, to get 100% you need to do something different as the poster wants 100% RWD.

I have to agree though it is a bit self defeating as the chassis is setup for 4WD and the engine hangs right over the front of the wheels so the weight distribution is crap for RWD.

Don't do it mate, trust me 70% is scary enough using the DCCD which I have nick named the switch of certain death in my car

no its no, drfrankinstu stewart from surrey scoobies has done a few of these conversions, his car & my business partners (22b wagon), its a conversion box (your right there) from canada
but ive kept my "traffic light system"
its still fully adjustable between fully rear and locked diffs.
i do prefer 70/30 split as you say (not good enough of a driver to drift her.)
but i drive with 100% rear most of the time ( )

I saw a video of a classic converted to RWD. So yes, it's possible.

Think it was in NZ/OZ. Showing it off all hooligan-style, just before wrapping it into the scenery

I'm guessing the Canadian product you mention is this from Neetronics. Seems to allow diff lock from 0% to 100%, which one presumes means you'd be 100% RWD. Not sure how well the mechanicals would stand up to be it permanently run in this configuration though.

The DCCD is essentially an open diff progressively locked, without replacing the diff itself you can't make it 100% rear driven. I do know of at least one car though that had the center diff butchered to make it RWD and the original DCCD cluthes used to bring in front drive like the Skyline ATTESSA.

good find sir, yep, thats the one we use.........

is this not 100% rear then?..certanly feels like it when shes on?

it definatly gives more transfer than the standard DCCD set up.
would highly recomend this unit.

to give you an example of the cost we incured:

DCCD box £350 (secondhand ebay)
neetronics management unit £250
LSD, £100 (secondhand ebay)
fitting £75

all work fine.

so you see its not a bad option for converting WRX (classic) to DCCD aftermarket systems.

same reason as the WRC boys i would expect........no brainer.
if im not mistaken...all WRC cars have this option, to shift between ratios, including 100% rear drive if required.
all it gives you is OPTIONS, and you can never have enough of those, i understand that perminant rear wheel drive might seem mad?, but prehaps he wants to drift his car? the scooby would be good for that with the forward weight bias (lighter at the rear, for end out action)

no track days, all on the "track of life" much more demanding and confronts us everyday.
DCCD is not designed for track days or track racing, it was for homoligation purposes, in rallying (loose/slippery/gravel etc)
if you use your DCCD on partial or full lock, you will kill it on a track, it needs to combat slip, and not fight against its self, tarmac, high speed racing, you can set her and leave it alone.
just my thoughts again.

think i remmember little thread about appliying a little bit of the hand brake just so the light comes on can disable power going to front wheels
