Default PROBLEM WITH RPM-HELP!

hi guys,

my sti v3 is jumping from 4000 to 5000rpm and back again when i really put my foot down, it's over revving if you know what i mean, but i've no idea where the problem can be
other than that it feels great, but i reckon im losing power somewhere?
it's only started in the last couple of weeks, any advise would be great.

I've got a MY00 T2000 UK car, recently had the revs very unstabe on idle and the car would sometimes stall. Replacing the MAF sensor soon sorted the problem.

If your in gear the only way the revs can go up and down is with the cars speed rising and falling with it or due to clutch slip. It sounds like clutch slip to be honest, and the symptom you describe is a classic for turbo engines.

Best test is to put it in third and get it to about 3000rpm, boot it, as soon as accel has stabilised then stab the clutch pedal down and up (literlayy less than 1/4 second), as the clutch releases the revs will rise, when you come off the clutch the revs should come down 'quite' quickly and give a slight thump to the car, if they come down slowly (or stay the same until vehicle speed catches up) then the clutch is on its way out and its time to back off while you sort a replacement.

Had similar problem with my old rb5, would put the foot down & the car would be away then loss of power (like a cough) then it would go like stink. Check your MAF.

Merlot: Where are you located?
Very much sounds like clutch slip and it wants sorting sooner rather than later otherwise you may increase repair cost with damage to the flywheel.
As a guide for you a typical quality clutch replacement for your vehicle should cost under £450 plus vat. It really depends on what clutch you decide to go with.

If you drive the car in a manner such that the clutch does not slip you will probably be OK but it relies on you being able to drive carefully in that manner, otherwise the problem is exaserbated and more damage is done.

OK so the enthusiasts in your area that might be able to help you are Steven Darley who would tell you in two minutes if it was your clutch and point you in the direction of someone reliable to effect repair and not have you over.
Alan Bell will know who would help you without being ripped off or you could get in touch with Howard at HDC Subaru.
