Just the back box will make only a little difference. A little more rumble/burble. You need to shift the cats and do the headers to release the sound. I have done a turbo back prodrive system with headers and the car sounds great. Purposeful on acceleration but hushed enough at motorway speed to talk and listen to the radio.

This is a very personal thing. Some people will say my system is too quiet but it depends on what you can live with.

I had a wrx the same age etc as yours and when i changed the back box to a prodrive one it was a vast improvement. As has already been said, you can go even louder by removing cats etc, but then you ideally need a remap and things start to get expensive. I would say try the prodrive first, as I said, you will hear a big difference from the standard box.

I agree. Changing the back box was a great improvement. You have to have the windows down to really hear it, though. If that's not loud enough, you can replace the centre section for a straight through pipe which would be quite cheap and easy.

PD backbox and a deresonator section gave me a the noise I wanted, however I didnt have a clue it was as loud as it is until my wife drove past me the other day, even with the window down I did not know it was that loud!

Put the backbox on and get someone to drive passt you with it so you can gauge what it is like from the outside.

I have the Prodrive backbox and deresonated centre section which sounds nice and deep without being a pain.
