80,000 miles and all is well ......
300 miles to go and my Impreza will be turning 80,000 miles ......
May 2000 it became my main vehicle, it was new, it was Blue, it had Silver wheels and it was a proper UK car.
What has it cost me?
Well, apart from the usual 6 month Servicing costs it has cost me 4 sets of tyres and a set of front brake pads and discs at 66,500 miles.
The rear pads are worn and need replacing at 80,000 miles.
The Alarm Unit was replaced under warranty when it became apparent that it was susceptable to the new strong radio signals and the cambelt was rubbing on the cambelt cover - replaced under warranty.
The only other cost was to extend the warranty up until its 5th Birthday.
The Engine is as smooth as it ever was, the Gearbox just as sweet - the Turbo spools up as new.
The Clutch is getting worn as the biting point is a little higher than it was - but, I guess it still has a few years and 20,000 miles left in it.
The interior, much critisised by many, has stood up really well to a multitude of uses.
It has carried the family and dog across the country, it has towed a Folding Camper, it has carried a Top-Box, it has eaten miles with ease, it has returned 30mpg on runs and 25 around town, it has humiliated many a 'performance car' and it has done so without a missed beat.
Look after these cars and they will deliver the goods forever, it is, quite simply, the best car I have ever owned and is a credit to Subaru ..... to build a car that can cover the 0-62MPH sprint in a little over 5 seconds and last so damned well is an amazing achievement.
A fine example of a Motor Car ....... a Classic in the making, thanks Subaru!

I must admit they do last well, in the time i have had mine i have replaced: original back box as outer skin had corroded, rocker cover gaskets, radiator, regas air con, original rear disc's also corroded, rear pads and shoes and normal services and same as Mr Lewis clutch starting to go at 75K but still has 15-20k left under normal driving. Quite happy with that as it is all serviceable items that don't last forever.

My 01 WRX had 63k on it and ran like new. Set of brake pads and tyres was all it needed in time owned. Compared to my e class Mercedes that has needed approx 2k of repairs in last year it was a far far better car.

Good on ya mr lewis
many put you down on this site, but i for one am a big fan of your "common sense" approach.
Glad to see someone who has no need for silly engine mod's,and enjoys the car they bought straight out of the tin,so to speak
Happy motoring buddy

80,000 ! she's a mere pup, mine has just done over 119,000 miles and it a 93 classic, it has cost me a bit over the years though. I got it in 1998 and it had 45,000 on the clock and since then I have had to:
recondition the starter,
new clutch,
get the front suspension fixed after I hit a curb sideways,
several new exhausts parts,
both front cv joints,
and then just regular servicing too, it due a service now and needs several suspension bushes and a wheel bearing too.

When I sold my MY00 front seats, the guy arrived in a champagne coloured UK turbo which looked like a very decent looking car. The mileage was 180K
Honestly it really didn't look like it. He was buying my seats as drivers seat base was weakening and gone out of shape - couldn't really tell unless you sat in it.
He also claimed it was on the original clutch.

and no gold wheels :shudder:
Pete mine has done 90k, and is blue, and is a MY00, been modded to about 280bhp yet never misses a beat, still on original clutch (with life left in it too) its been on track twice
Ive only *had* to change the brake pads (fronts) cos I went on track and wanted something a bit better than standard
Replaced the rear disks but only cos I got a good deal on a set of 4 disks

80,000 was when my big end went
I suggest that when you are getting it fixed it's much cheaper to do the clutch at the same time because it will be only a parts cost plus you can also have the 90k service as well because that is a big one and a substantial part of it is carried out during the rebuild.

Orignal clutch lasted 160,000 miles in my 93 Scoob. Even then, only changed it because the release bearing started to make horrible noises!
Other things changed in the last 120,000 miles have been:-
numerous brake pads / discs / tyres / oil changes / oil filters,
a few sensors (MAP, coolant),
couple of cam belts/ sets of spark plugs
fuel pump,
steering gator,
radiator & top hose,
not bad in 7 1/2 years of motoring. Servicing has been done by myself, except for recent clutch change (API) and cam belts (dealers).
Now on 180,000 miles, and it's an import with gold wheels
Must have been the cocklink.....

To the questions about my claims about good mpg figures, which now appear to be 'standard' figures ............
I thought I had a 45 Litre Tank - so, my 35mpg figure went down to 26mpg when I was told that I had a 60 Litre Tank!
However, I have NEVER been able to get 60 Litres in - only ever around 45 Litres??????

After 3 and a half years of owning my car ive clocked up over 90k miles the car now has just over 160k miles on the clock. The engine is standard uk spec apart from i have replaced the standard panel filter with a k&n panel filter and changed the exhaust system.
Changed the cam belt twice, replaced the radiator, both rocker cover gaskets, front cam shaft oil seal, new disc's on back and front, 2 new sets of front pads, 1 set of rear pads, changed the power steering fluid pump, replaced the header tank when it cracked, had a new battery, 3 new sets of tyres, many oil changes, as for the clutch well according to most garages 'its on its last legs' ever since i got the car so fingers crossed it just keeps going!
I drag it backwards and forwards to cornwall from Essex with boring regularity and if something is going to go wrong it goes wrong in cornwall! I believe it thinks its doing me a favour by saving fuel costs through travelling on a low loader!

Getting 350 miles to a tankfull was giving me 35 mpg on a 10 Gallon tank ... quite a bit less on a 60 litre tank!

So are you saying you run on empty everytime you fill up?
Convert litres used into gallons used, then divide the number of miles covered by the number of gallons used. Not hard is it Pete?
Do you not look at the pump gauge when filling up? Very strange to just 'assume' that you used 60 litres every time you fill up!

You're STILL not listening
I thought I had a 45 Litre Tank, not a 60 Litre ......
When it was empty on the gauge (yes, I drive around with the car showing an empty tank!!) all that claptrap bollox about fuel-surge doesn't worry me, I'm a REAL man ...... anyway, I would squeeze about 43 litres in and do another 350 miles before needing to fill up again.
Hence I was convinced I had a 45 Litre tank - quite logical really, shame your mind doesn't work in the same way?
