GATSO Cameras
#1
Ive had a few e-mails from people in the last few weeks who amongst other things have triggered ATS cameras while the lights have been green. So for them (and anyone else who hasn't seen the photos GATSO's generate) here are some examples:

You are not going to tell us that GATSOs are accurate after that last couple, are you? I still can't decide whose fault the first one was, possibly the Astra for not accelerating quickly enough.
I liked the Renault 19 one, do you think the driver will give some thought to the hearse the next time a red light is encountered.
I am in favour of these cameras at every set of traffic lights, hopefully they are not only looked at only after an accident, as it appears to be at least a weekly event for me having to avoid somone jumping red lights, grrr.

Comparing the two shots of the Skoda it has travelled just under 13m in 0.5 seconds, which means the average speed between the two shots is approximately 56 mph, which is what the second shot says. What was the speed limit on this section of road? It appears to be a dual carriageway and I cannot see any signs indicating a limit lower than 60 mph. So why has the Skoda been booked?

This photo was taken on the A45 near Coventry and is in a 60mph limit.
The '056' in the right hand corner of the picture is actually the frame number not the average speed. The car activated the camera as he was doing 84mph (indicated by the top line of data in the first picture)
Each of those white lines is 5ft apart. The vehicle has travelled forward (even though its a Skoda ) 12 spaces meaning it has covered 60 feet in 0.5 seconds. When you work it out you get a speed of 82mph which is about right when compared with the original 84mph as shown on the camera.

Sunil,
If it has flashed on green - then going by these pictures you should be alright as they show what colour the trafic lights were on.
Sound reasoning to me. But then I have been spending a while in the muppet forum.

It always amazes me the number of people who beleive that the national speed limit on dual carrigeways is 60Mph!!!!
It's 70 on dual carrigeways and 60 on single lane carrigeways... buy a copy of the highway code!!!

I figure from the billboard that the first incident occurred in Nottingham.
I reckon it must be the worst city in Britain for jumped red lights. I see people jumping them almost every time I'm there and have nearly been hit twice!
This just doesn't seem to happen anywhere else.
Anyone else noticed this about Nottingham?

I think that the pictures show why nobody ever disagrees with traffic-light cameras being a good thing.
How on earth can the 1st one be the Astra's fault??? It doesn't even look like the Sierra braked, I wonder if he floored it hoping to get through?
As for the speeding Skoda, looked totally reckless with half a mile gap in front of him.

Stef,
it's obvious, if the Astra had accelerated harder then the accident would have been avoided!
The second one is a CLEAR case of rubber necking. The driver of the Renault (?) obviously wanted to get a closer look at the hearse, perhaps some bizarre fettish? There was clearly enough room between the hearse and the following vehicle to get a bus through so there can be no other explanation!
Finally, the Skoda must have just visited Poor Engineering and has a Warp 3 conversion done, which has successfully raised the top speed to an earth shattering 84MPH. The driver go SOOOO excited that he/she clearly didn't see the Gatsometer. Upon realising the error of his/her ways the brakes were applied. Unfortunately they were not upgraded at the same time and only managed to retard the vehicle by 2MPH over the 60ft, making the stopping distance of the vehicle about 840 yards. Scary stuff!
But in all seriousness, there are some idiots out there, so be careful peeps! :-)
Cheers,
Pat.

The Skoda is probably trying to slow down from the nice run he's just had down the M45 from the M1. (Quality road. U can do 70mph for miles with no one around anywhere and its Down hill )
Also anyone notice its a skoda Estate!!!! must have been stolen, coventry is full of older people and older people never drive fast. Just check out the person at the front of that queue in the middle lane doing 50mph down the M1............Sorry thats another thread.

The first pair of pictures just goes to prove that my driving style has been correct all along. It is best to floor it away from traffic lights
PS Could've been very nasty for the Peugeot driver had the Astra not inadvertantly "intervened"

LOL at those piccies!!
Just a rather obvious question to me but surely the photo should be taken with the car before and after the white line whilst the lights are red.
I would contest those in court as the lights could have been amber until 1 millisecond after i had crossed the line.
Over to you Stuart
PS. I too am amazed at the number of people that think a dual is a 60MPH limit.

Stef,
Have you borrowed Stuarts sense of humour bypass, of course I was joking, hence the smiley icon for the message, I have now started putting them in the body of the messages to avoid any further confusion.
John, I think it might be difficult to take a picture of a car which has jumped a red light, before the offence has taken place.

Robertio,
Not true -- you could record a rolling 30s of video into temporary storage (e.g. RAM) then dump the lot onto something more permanent (disk, tape, etc.) in the event that an infringement triggers the radar. This has been proposed to help accident investigators, with video cameras on lamp-posts which are triggered to dump the video clip by the sound of an accident occurring.

Carl,
I'm in favour of that, I have a sneaky suspicion, that they may cost slightly more though. I am guessing but the only reason I can think of for not having the cameras on every set of lights at the moment is cost, so anything that costs more is less likely to be implemented. Still we can but hope.

Carl: Not so easy on FILM though is it
If you study how far the Astra has moved during the two shots, compared to the Pug he must have been flying!
Pat: have you ever been in one? - SCARY INDEED! The only thing which is more scary is the reaction time of the drivers
StuartH: Trust you lot to still work in feet per second
Chris

Crikey Stu! That renault must be motoring, the space in the two frames is quiet big! What a loony. Take it thats dangerous driving then?!
Can you explain then mate (you have already done this for me) why on a road in west london i pulled up to a junction and got flashed without being accross the line. This may clear it up for people that have had this happen to themsleves.

I'm not convinced those pictures would hold up in court, I mean surely you've got to be able to read the license number
Ps If I get caught can I keep the pictures ? If so I'd like mine in a nice blue frame ingraved with a gold leaf 555, I'm sure it's not too much trouble
Thanks in advance !
