Angry Stopped by Police for Number plate

Hubby just been stopped by police in my car for number plate - no spacing

On the spot fine of £30

Took pictures of plate to send to DVLA, who "might take it further". So I might get a fine as well.

Police said cutting down on plates, starting next week this offence will be endorsable".

Got to change plate a.s.a.p.

Anyone else heard this ??

Another crime statisitic cleared up, plus ANPR cant always read mis-spaced registration. This means a manual check of the plate- time wasted from donut eating!!

whaaaaaaaa, it was horrible

i had to defend myself in court. i wasnt entitled to see a free solicitor and the gallery was full of students. they showed all the pics they took and had measured to the last mil between the letters. i had mine spaced too far apart. they were really picky. the cop suggested to the judge that the court remove my registration. thats when i **** myself. luckily the courts do not have the power to do it, thats for the DVLA. the fine kicked my butt though

i know my plate was readable as i have been caught in a bus lane before

Was/Is the spacing on the plate illegal?

No - then feel free to complain.

Yes - *shrug* You got caught - swallow it down, buy a properly spaced plate, and stop whining.

crime detected and cleared up in an instant

Job done, another nice crime statistic, and yet another member of the public annoyed.

Come on, we all know its illegal so don't do it, if you do and get caught then sadly you need to be dealt with and have been.

If you have to mess about with your plate in a feeble attempt to get it to 'read' something then, I'm afraid, you should buy the plate that says it without messing about.

I think its illegal aswell.

I would like a 3/4 size plate for the front of mine because it would look much tidier.. but apparently its illegal, so not really worth it.

Thats a bit better - now, work on your grammar - when refering to I it is a capital letter, not i

And what has my P1 got to do with your bad spelling?

Bought small plate at NBO, one week later bought new legal plate after a very nice Police officer pointed out that it was illigal and that it should be a £30 on the spot fine.
Informed me that could take it further but as long as I changed the plate he will let me go.

Lesson learnt.......

They have a job to do and laws are laws whether we like it or not.

I was thinking about gettting a smaller plate but really I only need a couple of inches cutting off either end because there's a rather large gap. If the lettering is the correct size and spaced correctly am I likely to get into trouble or when you say 'a smaller plate' do you also mean smaller letters?

What is the legal requirement regarding the actual plate, I intend drilling small holes in the white area say 1 3 mm hole every 25mm (for air flow to FMIC).

I cant find anything about this...

When I see a private plate spaced illegally in a desperate attempt to make it spell something all I see is T055 ERS.

Unfortunately its just another easy way for the police to make up their crime numbers for the stats.

flaps

as long as the spacings are correct and the sizes are fine then you may be able to cut some of either end of your plate. there is nothing that states your numebr plate must be a certain size only the fact the letters/numbers must be standard size and the gaps must be correct, but, this applies to the gaps from the edges of your number plate to the letter/numbers as well. my private plate is N5 *** which is spaced correctly but I have managed to take about 2 inches of either side and its still legal.

hope that helps a little.

Are you having a laugh? The regulations are splattered all over the literature the DVLA send out, you can't be serious that you didn't know!

Might take it further means taking the plate off you and issuing a standard number.

MattW are you saying that illegal plates are an endorsable offence? I thought max £1000 fine.
