You should even try to start it if you have done that.
I thought Diesel pumps at petrol stations were muche thicker than petrol ones to stop this happening.

drain it out on both sides of the tank and replace fuel filter and plugs but do not do the plugs right away as you need to burn of the remaining fuel.If you have not done much driving it will be okay it will smoke for a bit but will not hurt it.I did it with mine and i have had no problems at all.Just make sure you undo both caps on each side of the tank and drain it..

On my JDM the fuel neck is massive, you can nearly put your arm in (slight exaggeration) certainly no problem in getting any pump to fit in.

My mate did this with his JDM, was told not to start it. He got a tow from the AA home. Got it drained by his mechanic friend and filled with petrol.

Still gave out some smoke and stank too apparently. He left it on idol till it seemed to be running smooth again.

If you get it out before u run it ur fine, it will smoke and you will have well lubed bores but its once it clogs filters/injectors etc it gets nasty.

A few years ago it was good practise to put a bit if Diesel into the petrol tank 1litre per tankful - great upper cylinder lubricant!

£20 worth is a lot more than that however!

Re-kindling an old thread here people because I've done exactly the same thing.
I've put £40 of Diesel in my P reg Wagon tonight and stupidly ran it for a good minute before the penny dropped and it simultaneously conked out!
The AA came out to pump the fuel out but gave up when only half was retrieved and a measured 20Litres had been pumped out. The AA Technician determined that there were twin fuel tanks but could seemingly only drain one? Can anyone offer any advice please on how to drain the reast of the fuel and or any other useful advice please?
The AA Didnt charge the £209 quoted for fuel draining and have deposited my car back home for me. Please help?

Just fill to the brim with petrol and drive off boost till you get the fuel light on then fill to brim with petrol and repeat. only saving grace at the price of diesel you will not have put too much in.

The car might run like a cow for a wee bit and smoke a bit but it should be fine as long as you DRIVE OFF BOOST

Dont drive the car, you can add a little petrol to the older diesels but diesel in a petrol is a
It needs to be drained and the fuel filter and plugs replaced as stated above.

Thanks again for advice thus far but can anyone suggest why the AA had difficulty draining both tanks and or offer advice as to how I do?
The car has, as stated, already been run unfortunately and pretyy much stalled.

never ever run diesel in a petrol, no matter what. if you do you will find out the hard way what it does to a petrol engine. diesel is oil based so it wont vapourise or burn poroperly in a petrol engine even with a spark because the injection and compression pressures are not high enough for it to vapourise or self combust the engine will end up coked or hydraulic'd.

You may also have issues with any sensors in your downpipe and your catalytic converters, this could be an expensive tank of fuel

Drain fully put £10 of petrol in it, run it till thats nearly gone, then change fuel filter, fill with petrol run the full tank off, then change plugs and fuel filter again and fill again then PRAY !!!!! The intank filter is a good idea to change also

IF This happens dont start it get it recovered home or a garage. take tank off the car (its easy) and clean out the tank use a cleaner which removes all traces of oil, ie a degreaser. That way no traces of diesel make it to the engine. Also change the in tank filter.And while your at it an uprated fuel pump is a good idea for what they cost but obviously not needed

£20 is too much. Don't drive it unless you want to risk it cutting out on you. Don't bother with changing plugs; thats just overkill. Just drain and refil, change the fuel filter, then go easy on the next tank of fuel (keep off the boost and drive keeping the revs below 4000rpm and above 2000rpm)

You may have got away with £5-10; any strogner and you'll find it may run ok when cold, but as soon as it warms up it'll run like a bitch with no legs.


I used to run my bangers on petrol diesel mixes drained from customer's cars. I found a mix ratio of about 1:3 of contaminated:fresh petrol to be the limit before it started smoking too much and being a pig to drive.

(its kidney shaped due to the propshaft going through teh middle of the car)

I've only ever done it via the access panels under the rear seat, using a pneumatic syphon pump that runs off an airline.

Usually its a 60litre tank but it depends on model year and spec.
