Is it illegal to flash middle lane motorway hoggers i'm getting really fed up with drivers who just sit in the middle lane when the nearside lane is empty particularly at night when th eroads are pretty empty. Why do they do this

I haven't been flashing yet but I make a point of going up close then overtake and go back to the nearside lane but its crazy having to do that they should move over

I can't believe that I've just come in from a run out near Leeds and read this post.

here here , i do lots of motorway miles a week and have now been passing the time thinking up names for these to££ers ,

Current favourite is "compressors" making the road into a dual carriage way ,

Try driving from say Manchester to M62 / A1 junction and its full of middle lane morons, - no idea why they sit in the middle lane when lanes around them are empty ! Does give you a kind of satifiaction when wake one up and make them go into lane one.
Like the idea of the horn while passing - must try that one !

Almost worth buying one of those electronic signs for the back of the car and display some message about them hogging the middle lane ! Could be a laugh !

What's just as bad is lack of any road sense. I drive a big delivery van and a lot of driving is on the motorway. I find it particularly annoying when folk don't have the foresight to keep the inside lane clear when approaching and going past entry slip roads. The big HGVs all move into the centre lane but you will always get the odd dawdler playing chicken and forcing you to come to a complete halt before you can join the motorway.

if i get stuff behind them for more then 3mins and they show no sign they are going to move i under take them they **** me off then they have the nerv to look at you as if you have done some thing(yes i know under taking is dangerous bla bla bla) if they would move over we wouldnt have to do this !!

I'm not generally happy undertaking anyone in the middle lane unless my lane is going faster than the middle lane although sometimes I find I am the only one in my lane.

However, I am relatively happy to undertake someone if there is a free lane between us although, one day, I'm sure it will attract unwanted attention.

too true i undertake only when i know it is safe, but i do think that these people are either lazy drivers or very bad drivers that need the whole road to drive within there comfort zone.

agree with m62 towards leeds from manchester loads of them on there must be scared of falling off one of the hills if they use the first lane so they stick to the middle lane.

Arthur Conan Doyle never mentioned it in his books. I presume Basil Rathbone used it for dramatic effect in the films. Back on topic middle lane hogging should carry three penalty points as a minimum.

Even moving from the inside lane to the outside and nearly taking their front end off when moving back to the inside doesn't work all the time

We should have compulsary motorway disipline taught and made part of the test, like when in europe. you never see it happening or very rarely.

I reckon the worst place for it is on the A2/M2, the new 4-lane section, London bound, near the Medway crossing. For some reason, people sit in the THIRD lane there

I just go on my merry way in the inside lane and ignore them. Beats me why they do it.

Was once towing a large trailer down to Dover, followed some old witch for MILES on the M11 as she was in the middle lane at 50mph, the inside lane was full of HGVs, and I wasn't allowed in the third lane. It'd be just my luck to run out of patience just as I overtook PC plod in an unmarked

Know it's illegal and will get caught one day but boy does it work.

You should never stop at the end of the slip road. Police advice is to use the hard shoulder to continue but merge as soon as possible.

That's fair - but then there are those people who see a junction coming up and move into the middle lane anyway, just in case something is coming down the slip road. They then seem to like it there and stay there. Bit hard to actually look at what is happening - better safe than sorry! T*****

I'm caught between the wto - staying in the inside lane and just driving past them at whatever speed I am doing, wonderinfg if they are thinking 'look at that idiot for undertaking' when I'm laughing at them, or indeed pulling out behind them and cutting them up when I come back in - for which they often flash the lights. Total joke really.

I have once, about 10 years ago, seen a copper driving up behind people in the middle lane and flashing high lights - they then move over and he moved onto the next one. The only time I have EVER seen it.

And well done to the poster who said it turns them into d/carriageways. Too blinkin right it does and that creates more jams than anything on our motorways.
