Get a single din unit and a pocket to fill the hole. Pocket can be bought from Subaru dealer, do a search on her for Din pocket for the part numbers (there are two, one from the forester with a neat flap/cover and an open one).

I put a Kenwood DDX-6029 in my 2004 STi and the finish colour of the kenwood was the same colour as the trim so it has a real factory looking finish to it. I also filed the mounting brackets out by 10mm or so as to allow the face of the unit to fit flush with the dash. Everyone that has seen it so far has really liked it. here is some pics for you to look at

A single DIN head unit and a SECS PSi3 does just the trick

No trickery or extra parts needed to fit them, just unscrew the cage sides from the factory din unit, and screw in the headunit

there are plenty of headunits available

just look on the kenwood, alpine, pioneer websites and look for the double dine units

I have a Kenwood 6029 as above.
