Default Advice on tracker please

As a requirement by Direct Line i have to get a tracker fitted to my Impreza classic.

The cheapest ones ive seen so far is the smartrack ones. £299 fitted.

Does anyone know if these trackers keep track of what speed you are travelling? or do they only track you if your car gets stolen??

I have a Trackstar tracker fitted. Vehicle Tracking System Using GPS - Trackstar
Run by RAC, can act as a normal tracker, or have extras like safe speed and emergency and breakdown too.

Safe speed is like a build in GPS camera detector, works pretty darn well too.
E&B is a button that opens a phone line up so you can speak to the breakdown for help and they can locate you via GPS, or to the emergency services, should you need to summons their help. Both are chargable.

As for it recording your speed etc, they could be used as spying devices, but the law does not currently allow that. Being GPS based, the data from any tracker could be used in the same way.

How much did you pay for your trackstar?

Do they come to your home to install it?

Errm about £300 and yes its fitted in a location of your choice. Work, home etc.
I have added safe speed and E&B though so paid a bit more for the options
As long as the safe speed is chirping away near speed cameras, I know the GPS is working lol

As far as the criminal prosecutions go, I would think it would have to be a serious incident to use such data, most commonly I would think would be if the car is stolen and chased etc.

Hi, i've got rac trackstar plus fitted on mine. cost about £475. be warned thought, police can use them to locate car as mine mate found out. he has one of those small number plates on the front, driving around one day, copper drives past u turns and sirens on, so my mate decided to turn off down back roads and hammer the thing to his mates place. lost the copper easily but about 2 hours later 4 cop cars and helicopter found him even thought it was in his garage and all he got was a £45 fine for dodgy number plate.

I can only think that maybe they thought the car was stolen, trackers are only meant to be triggered after a report from the owner of its illegal movement or if you have a monitor system.

I would be on the phone to Trackstar about that to confirm they assisted with the tracking of you car. Also I dont think Trackstar works the same way as Tracker, i.e the police dont have receivers in their cars for Trackstar, as far as I know they use the Trackstar control centre to locate the car, so they would definatly have a record of working with the police to track it.

As for the annual subscription, all trackers have various cost. Depending what level you select with what tracker. Mine is about 20 quid a month inc safe speed and E&B.
I would love to find out the phone number of my E&B system though, so I could have incoming calls lol

Surely by the time you have paid for fitting and annual subscription (£400+) you can get a cheaper deal from a different company that doesnt require tracker.

A lot have trackers already fitted so as a s/h owner you only need pay the monthly/annual subscription.
Personally its peace of mind to me to have the tracker and other 2 devices fitted, especially the E&B

Did they tell you what make of tracker it was.

Call up the company, advise you are the new keeper, wish to confirm its fitted and working, and wish to take over the account.

Doh, only thing to do then is call customer services of Tracker, Trackstar and any of the others, tell them the score and see if any of them have a record of the vehicle.

They wont want to tell you too much until they can verify you are the keeper, but should be able to tell you enough to get the ball rolling to get the tracker live again and an account running.

Apprently RAC Trackstar is the approved pre sales tracker, so prob best to start there.

Don't think you can get insured without the tracker as it's such a high insurance group.

Snazy,

Log into your Satellite Navigation and In Car Sat Nav from Smartnav account and click on the tab marked Edit Options. this willgive the tel number of the system.
I've used it several times now and it is very clear.

I find that Safe Speed is semi useful - it only shows fixed sites.
I queried why it didn't show the cameras on the A2/M25 road works and was told that they are "temporary". The work is scheduled for months so they seem pretty fixed to me.
The other annoying thing is the touch screen is fixed in place so can't be removed when parked.
