Hi,
Is it possible at current exchange rates to buy a Euro WRX from either Holland or Belgium, fly out and drive it back yourself (cheapest route possible), tax it, and get a CAT1 alarm fitted all for £16,500?
I am on a strict budget and need to know if this is possible before I place an order.

I would not think you could do all that for 16,500. Call Ian at Litchfield imports he gave me the best quote.

I ended up bying a 2nd hand euro import with 2000 miles on it.

Watch out for the exchange rates if your budget is that tight. Normally you would pay a deposit to the dealer, wait a few weeks/months for the car to arrive and then pay the balance. In this time the price in £'s could have crept up (or down) on what you budgeted for. £16,500 should not be far out but you should probably have a look for at least another £500 down the back of the sofa.

To get around the currencey conversion problem use someone like currencies4less who will allow you to buy your foreign cash at todays rate as long as you pay a deposit, you then pay the remainder when you want the money. I used them when I bought my car, and I was very impressed with their level of service

I've looked at various car import sites, litimports and keyring cars etc, I realise that these people have to make a living and add 3 or 4 hundred quid to the overall cost, I was hoping to save on the 'managed service' fee and buy a CAT1 alarm instead if I DIY.
I'll check out the currency sites and try to fix a rate before giving Gertjan my deposit.
By the way, are the prices in Belgium roughly the same as in Holland and does anyone know of a reputable dealer who deals with RHD?

Ordered my MY02 & will be picking it up around March. Total cost is £16039 inc VAT at an exchange rate of 1.60.

£16,695 I think was Litchfields price for a MY02 delivered to full uk spec. So £16039 sounds right for collection...

As for Trackers, they are fairly irrelevant to the import debate for WRX's are they aren't standard on UK cars, and remember a regular Tracker is only £279 fitted, and other devices are available for less than £500...

The thing to remember about EU cars is they do not have CAT 1 alarms fitted unlike the UK cars which do, so you will have to factor in £300 for a basic one up to £600 for a top spec one...

I agree that Trackers are not relevant to an import debate. But, I thought that funds were limited for Danny B, and I strongly suggest that he checks with his insurer whether or not he will have to have one fitted. I got caught out with this, and I was told that I had to have a 24hr. device, hence a ball park figure of £500.00 more than I was expecting to pay.

Agreed, but not all Co's require tracker, eg Direct Line Etc don't always require them on MY01, just on earlier scooby's... And if they do Barclays don't and usually match their qoutes As to insurers insisting on proactive trackers, I hadn't heard of that on scooby's yet, my quotes for a skyline GTR (hopeful next purchase ) were the same whether the car had a proactive or standard tracking device... That said I seem to remember David Yu in Evo needed a Proactive tracking device for his ferrari

just got my 02 model on wed cost 16,800 delivered to the door from keyring cars fantastic service,fantastic car.but if you go and pick it up it will be 490 notes cheaper ,all i had to do was register it ,but that only took 24 hrs

Dont mean to hijack this thread but got relevant question i think-

a m8 of mine has a wrx on order(sept2001) from Holland for delivery in FEB2002 (via a uk company but dont know who)

When he placed his order he didnt know about MY01 MY02 etc
Question is: will his car be an 01 or 02 model year- his now worried about getting an "old" MY01 spec car instead of the MY02 spec. theres nothing in his paperwork about MY01 or MY02 so maybe he could get stuck with a MY01? or are they ALL MY02 now?



any replies much appreciated as his fretting is spoiling our nites down the boozer

It will be a MY02... The reason the wait is so long is the RHD cars are usually built to order for the EU cars. The MY02 was introduced in November, and looks like the only real change is the ariel location - now its in the middle of the roof rather than on one side.

just want to correct you on the location of the aerial on MY02 - it is not on the middle of the roof !! - it is in fact integrated with the back rear window (together with the heating elements) ...

Back to the initial question; don't forget your locking wheelnuts - they are only £30 (demon tweaks) but critical for your insurance cover.

So Based on Bob's quote of £16039 (is that metallic, I guess so...)
You'd have to add a CAT 1 Alarm - £280 (this will get one at least as good as OEM UK)
Locking Wheel Nuts - £20 (Halfords Price! Seem to remember they are even less at a main dealer oddly enough :|)
Road Tax (is this included?) - £160

Total - £16499!

Only things not included are transport... but to be honest I think Litchfields price of £16695 includes the alarm (but not tax?) so for £16855 you can have one delievered.

(Of course that's not how I'd spend £17k )
