Default TUNING ADVICE FOR MY STANDARD 2002 WRX

Hi All,

Need some advice on tuning my 2002 WRX. Want the best £'s per BHP.

The car is completely standard apart from a centre section back stainless exhaust which I had made up (driving a quiet scoob just wasn't right).

I understand the standard bhp is 215/220 and I want to boost this up a bit.

What are my best options, what sort of cost am I looking at?

Thinking of a remap but how much power can the standard internals cope with?

A "stage one" tune would be a sportscat downpipe, £300 from Scoobyworld or API, decat up-pipe at £135, Green air filter at £50 or so and a Ecutek 3 remap at £585.

This will give you about 280bhp, which will feel dramatically faster than 222bhp. The turbo will also spool up at about 300 revs less.

You can go down the route of replacing turbos for more power , but this gets pricey as you need supporting mods to keep the engine safe.

The consensus seems to be that the WRX gearbox can cope with about 350bhp (although people often give torque figures). Still I'd wait to see if other people confirm that one.................

Lastly, with extra power, you may find your WRX a bit soft, so a Whiteline anti-roll bar and steel droplinks will tidy up the handling (£150), and if you STILL have more cash , Prodrive springs are great.

hope this helps,

Andy

Question for ya...

How much noisier is the car with the above work. Still all good for the daily grind, or a bit intrusive ?

The MY02 is pretty civilised for around town but above 4000 RPM with the above mods be prepared to attract some attention LOL

Aaaah cheers Shaun lol

I like hooning thru the railways arches at Vauxhall as it is, and expect trouble on the exit daily. Might that be a bad idea with these mods? lol

Noise is prob one of the only things putting me off power right now. I dont want IN YA FACE noise.
How less a gain would I face losing the exhaust changes do you reckon, or would that just be pointless.

Fit non CAT up pipe.
Fit 3" downpipe
Fit Sports (5") CAT centre section
Back box of your choice,
ECUTEK Remap..

The standard catted exhausts makes it go like an Asthmatic slug above 5500rpm.
Expect around 270 Bhp
300 if you change the turbo to something slightly bigger like a VF34 and a set of Sti injectors.

Here is a good link. Its Scoobyclinics tuning page. It gives all the mods needed at each stage and likely power with each (think each stage needs a remap to take advantage of it).

Need to remember brakes and suspension at each stage too as they both become less effective

If you want to keep the noise down, but still have a nice free flowing exhaust then look at the scoobysports back box. The Hayward and Scott is pretty much identical too. I think these are 3.5 inch exits, with the rolled lip. A prodrive back box will be even quieter. Easily available on general sales forum here or ebay.

Gives a nice sound when really pushing it, but is civilised enough to sit on the motorway at 80ish and wont get ppl calling you a hooligan starting it up at home and pottering around town.

Just avoid the 4.5 inch 'jap style' exhausts - I removed mine due to it just being annoying on the motorway.

And if the remap cost is a little high for Ecutek (due to license fee) then there is an alternative. ask scoobynet member JollyGreenMonster for non-ecutek mapping costs.

The Impreza WRX Performance Package has been designed
to deliver class leading performance, boosting torque by
up to 25% and extending its availability across a wider rev
range than the standard engine.
The improved performance is produced through a carefully
developed combination of matched exhaust and engine
management modifications. This combination of enhancements
boost peak power to 265PS at 6,000rpm (previously 225PS at
5,600rpm on the standard engine) and deliver an impressive
348Nm of torque at 3,200rpm, an improvement of 16% on the
maximum torque of the standard car.
With the Performance Package fitted, the Impreza WRX has
more torque than the peak of the standard road car from
2,750rpm right through to 6,250rpm. These impressive statistics
ensure that drivers have the responsiveness required for
performance driving including all-important, mid-range
overtaking.
