Default Wheel Bearing Going?

Just in time for my trip to the ring on easter weekend i think i may have a wheel bearing going.

If there is a whining noise coming from the back somewhere i take it this is probably the sign of a wheel bearing on its way out?.

If not anyone got any other ideas. It sounds like its coming more from the centre of the car as oppossed to the wheels but i may be wrong.

Just for reference its an my93wrx

Thanks
Dave

If it is a wheel bearing it will probably sound worse when cornering.

Could be the diff. As mentioned the wheel bearing will get worse or better with cornering. Find a big car park and drive in a circle. It should get worse going one way (wheel under load) and better the other (wheel not under load). Invariably a wheel bearing will get deteriorate with further driving and get louder and louder. It will be quite apparent then. It it does then get it changed ASAP before it collapses.

I had this happen last month on a 98 Type R.

There was also no play in the wheel making it even harder to diagnose.

Went for the wheel bearing anyway and luckily thats what it was. I also found it hard to work out which side the noise was coming from. If you go for this make sure you get the right size as there are 2 different sizes for the rears.

A decent garage will diagnose it for you. The one I used when the berarings went on my '98 UK car was one of a chain, but I knew the manager well. they put the car on the ramp, all wheels free, drove it gently, and listened to the diff and the wheels using a sort of a stick with a stethoscope on the end. The noise was defo louder from the bearings, so they did both, on the grounds that if one was going.......

Not an easy job, apparently They managed to break something doing it, and stood the repair, which is the thing about getting it done by a DECENT garage.

I had my mate in the boot whilst trying to diagnose which side it was, he said it sounded like it was coming from the middle too. The way i found it was to jack up the rear of the car, drop the propshaft off the diff end, then you can spin the wheels individually to find the noisey one.

Think its more likely to be a bearing.

Wheel bearing £60-70 from Camskill. As said earlier make sure its the right size, then about an hours labour.

i've just had a rear wheel bearing replaced. No whining at all but got a very loud click when changing momentum from forward to back or vice versa. Turned out to have a hairline crack in the bearing.

Had mine changed not long ago, my98, turned out to be a real pig to do with seized suspension parts and all. It need new rear arms as the old ones had to be cut off, plus a five hour labour bill. On top of all that, I had to get the alignment set up again as the new suspension arms put it all out !! £500+
