I know this should go in ice but its quite quiet in there and need an answer sharpish.
for the front door of an my95,is it because they are too deep or is it the extra 1 cm means they wont fit the standard plastic spacer/support ?

It's mainly the second.
Get some 12mm mdf, a jigsaw, the old spacer and the new speakers you want to fit.
Draw and cut out the spacers using the old spacer and the new speakers as a guide, (a template, like Sony do, helps, but is NOT absolutely necessary).
A couple of coats of pait and away you go.
