I really need your help. My car has an engine problem and Subaru are trying to tell me it's a 'characteristic' of the engine.
Basically when your engine is settling down to normal idle rpm, for instance when pulling up at traffic lights, does the engine knock? And when you start it when it's warm does it knock for 5-10 seconds until it has settled at idle speed?
Please state a brief reply,MY99 or MY00, and your approximate mileage.
Please take a minute to reply I really do need your help with this one.
Many thanks,
Otis.

Depends on what you really mean by knocking. I had an MY00 for 4000 miles and I thought I could hear the occasional pinking under the circumstances you describe.
Having tuned 8 valve engines many years ago, I certainly know what pinking sounds like, but not knocking, which I am assuming is what happens after pinking gets worse.

I'm an ex-MY99 owner. Had it for 10months/7500 miles from new. It never made any noises like the one you're describing, so it sounds asthough they're trying to fob you off.

MY00 + PPP, 6K miles - no knocking, ever!
When warm though, mine has a 'characteristic' where the engine seems to splutter when on the clutch biting point - I blip the revs to compensate.

Otis,
Easy solution...
Ask your dealer to start up one of his many unsold pre-owned examples on his forecourt and then start yours up. Ask him to confirm "That they all sound like that". Just a suggestion...

JoeyDeacon and Diablo,
The dealer has been great, even they think there is a problem!! It's Subaru UK who are trying to sidestep it.
Keep 'em coming, this is just what I was hoping for.

Otis,
MY99 Turbo, 25,000 miles and had it from new.
It has never made any knocking noises as described under any circumstances.
I cannot accept that knocking is a characteristic of any mainstream production engine.
Good luck

Smooth as silk
99 around 10k no knocks 98 25k ditto.
If they say it's a standard characteristic
get 'em to start a couple of S/h motors on the forcourt! That will prove if it's bull**** or paranoia!
Then take appropriate action.
Sorry for the repetition - delayed between reading and posting.

MY00 Turbo 4500 miles, smooth as silk.
Get your local Trading Standards dept. in volved, they may well help things along. They will have a car specialist, these guys are very good.
Failing that, give Anne Robinson a call, even though she is a minger!

Geezer,
Subaru have already been on Watchdog!! Remember in the good old days when residual values were high and there was a 6 month waiting list for cars?? Well quite rightly some people were getting a little upset when they were told that their car had been delivered but they couldn't have the colour they had ordered or were being asked to pay for a sunroof they didn't want. Basically the dealers had told them that could take what they were offered of effectively go away!!
And yes she is a minger but the other woman on the show is rather nice (not sure of her name)....

MY00, 13500 miles. Does make occasional quiet knocking sound when started completely cold for about 5s, then no problem after that. Never get anything when starting warm.

Joey,
She is Charlotte. And I saw her first! OK. Grubby mits off. And while I am at it, stay away from VBH aswell.
Otis,
I hope you get the car sorted. You shouldn't have any knocks from a new engine IMO.

Otis,
I think our cars are pretty well identical in age, though yours has always been faster obviously!
15k miles now, I start it up in the garage every day so I would notice any odd noise/clunk/rattle. No it is as sweet as a nut.
I got it Nov 2nd 1999.
