Hi all,
It's coming up to my b'day and girlfriend is asking what to get me. Been looking at the S.E.C.S unit for a while now and just wanted people opinion's.
Is it a worth while piece of kit and give you valuable information or just a gadget.
Note it's to go in a WR1...
Any comments much appreciated.

Two views on this usually. If you like rows of flashy gauges that light up at night like the Space shuttle cockpit then the SECS unit is a bit plain & functional.
If you want no fuss information direct from your ECU via the OBD port by a simple plug & play connection then the SECS unit is the way to go.
I run the SECS monitor with the optional shift light & oil temperature sensor. It gives me a warning alarm for various readings that I can pre-set the level for. It will store the maximum revs, mph, boost & water temp that you reach on a run & it is re-settable. Useful to look back at after a day out playing to see what you got up to.
The most useful readings I find are :-
1. Oil temp so I know when it's safe to boot it & when to back off & let things cool down.
2. Max boost so I can check for spikes.
3. Battery voltage for obvious reasons in the winter.
4. Inlet temp (this is not charge temp) so you can see how under bonnet temps are rising when crawling or stationary in traffic.
5. Knock correction which points towards if the engine is happy or not.
This is my install in my MY03 WRX Wagon & my guide to fitting it

The Shift light is on the corner of steering column shroud.

Thanks flat eric, I'm not looking for flashing lights and gizmo's. I want to know if it's going to provide valuable information about if the car's likely to have a problem etc.
The next step is understanding what the information is and what to do in the event of a "spike"?

- Battery voltage - Volts
- Engine Speed - RPM
- Vehicle road speed - MPH or KMH
- Coolant temperature - Degrees C
- Intake temperature - Degrees C (This is not charge temp)
- Fuel injector pulse width - Milliseconds
- Ignition point - degrees BTDC
- Knock correct - degrees (ignition timing)
- Lambda air/fuel ratio
- Throttle position - %
- Air flow meter mass - Grammes per second
- Boost pressure - Bar or PSI
The adjustable alarms are for monitoring :-
- Battery voltage low
- Battery voltage high
- Boost pressure
- Coolant temperature
(You set what reading triggers the alarm)
How you interpret all the readings is up to you, as is what you do about them & many will depend on the state of tune of your car. Most are obvious, like low or high battery voltage, coolant temp & boost.
My car is mapped @ 1.25-1.3 bar so I set the alarm @ 1.35 bar to warn of spikes. The oil temp alarm is set @ 105C & goes off now & again when making progress & reminds me to back off for a bit.
SAFE OIL TEMP CLICK HERE
Low battery alarm is set @ 10 volts & the high alarm @ 15 volts (14 volts is normal). This once showed high voltage spikes & when checked I needed a new alternator as it was over charging.

Can anyone get through to them??? I sent them my SECS unit after it broke and they won't respond to my PM's for over a month now. As far as I know I'll never see it again. Simon, if you see this please respond. This was a very expensive piece and shipping it to you from the US was also not cheap, so please just let me know what is going on. Thank you.

Slow down garface, your last PM apart from the one today was on the 22nd Jan, asking me to let you know when the unit turns up, i had a letter from parcel force on friday 9th Feb informing me a parcel had arrived for collection when i pay the vat and clearance fee, we are trying to sort this out with them as it is not a purchase so don't want to pay vat, i will let you know when we have the unit, rather than pm on here please email to simonj@psi3.co.uk

simon , can i ask you a question mate , and im not having a go as i could be wrong but on the website does it mention anywhere a list of cars that it wont work with , i only ask this as i have bought one off here a weeks ago but have found out that it prob wont work , after looking through the site i couldn,t see anything mentioned about the unit not working on certain aged (classic) cars , as you can order and pay for the unit online it may be a good idea to mention it on the site , before i bought mine i checked the site but only seen references to pre/post 01 cars so therefore thought the unit i was buying was ok with my motor......please correct me if ive missed something on the site mate.........wes ,ps...just to note i bought the unit off here (bartop) but went and looked for details / info on the unit on your webpage before i bought it ...tnx

Serious question and not meaning to ruffle any feathers - but whats the functionality difference between a SECS unit and say, a Greddy Informeter or Blitz R-VIT, both of which are considerably cheaper.
On casual inspection all 3 units appear to offer the same functionality, and as the information is taken from the ECU accuracy is dependent on that rather the display method. So, other than asthetics, why purchase one over another?
