Default Costly to run arnt they..........

What I have had to do to keep my 96 UK Turbo on the road, never mind upgrades!

As follows.............

1... Clutch u/s, new one fitted at Gear Change in Somerset.
2... Cam belt kit fitted at a nation-wide Auto Centre.
3... A set of TOYO TR-1`s
4... A set of Platinum Plugs and Coil Packs (Done by me, not cheap and gave me a bad back for a week, plus high blood pressure and skinned knuckles!)
5... Fit a set of recon calliper's to the front end as mine had stuck on,did this my self too.
6... Normal servicing I.E. oils and filters (PS anyone know how to get the plug out of the rear diff, mine is corroded in place and it is the only fluid that I could not top up or change!)

I think I have spent about 1500 quid over the last 3 Years in just keeping it on the road, never mind the fuel, insurance,MOT`s and tax!!!

Has not put me off though, I am thinking of going for a 03 or 04 STI soon...........Bigger bills on the way.....Em?

Absoultely love scoobs. Buts that is always the reason I get rid of mine. Hit a financial low patch and need that new clutch plus a set of tyres etc all at once....
I think running costs are often the reason why people get shot of them. Which is no doubt the reason why I will eventually get rid of my next one!

They are such a great car - I suppose it would be too good to be true if they were also cheap to run.

I've owned mine a year....and it's cost me quite a bit more than £1500!

Engine rebuild: £1800 (removed and re-fitted myself as it would have been a few hundred more for the labour at a garage)

KYB shocks: £300

Tyres: £200

Servicing: £45 oil change every 3000 - 5000 miles, just done all transmission fluids and plugs at around £120.

New Turbo inlet: £50

New up-pipe: £130

New manifold: £30

That's just keeping it going....recently bought the following prior to getting the car mapped:

Apexi Power FC and commander, Apexi filter, Kakimoto exhaust, stainless downpipe, front-mounted intercooler.

so going by my £3530 for a year, it sounds like yours is proving very cheap to run. You should be delighted .

The secret is not to go to a Subaru garage for servicing! I used to and it was an expansive car to run. Now I have an excellent independent specialist and my last minor service was about £75 and the last major service £180.

The only problem in 3.5 years was an engine warning light coming on, cost about £100 to sort out with a new sensor. The car is now 6.5 years old.

Absolutely not, used every day to get to work and back and also general driving, about 11,000 miles a year and total mileage of 83,000 now.

It's just a standard, well looked after example of an ultra reliable car!

Ya, I suppose 1500 Quid over three years ant to bad, but more than I had to spend on any other car (apart from a Lancia Delta that I used to run)....... STI`s are looking a lot cheaper these days, been looking on the net and spotted quite a few from dealers at around the 14,000 grand mark, give or take, for 03 to 05 Years............. and spotted one for around 11,000 quid but with 128,000 miles on it! Just need to convince the Wife that I need a newer car.............When Subaru release the new car in 08 the price is going to drop again, so may well hang on to the old car from another Years and see what happens.........seeing as I have a Nearly new Clutch,Cam Belt,Serviced Engine,Tyres and Brakes!

Seems pretty good value to me, I reckon my 56 reg Spec D is going to cost a lot more than that a year without the worry of old bits needing replacing. In fact I think my last year of WR1 ownership cost the same as you have spent in 3 years!

Supercar Killer? Supercar ownership isn't just about speed it is far more intangible than that. It' about owning something special, rare - something which turns a drive into an event. Does the driver of an older bona fide Supercar mind if his car is slower than a Golf GTi, let alone a Scooby? No I dont think so. In fact I know so.

Doesn't detract from a Scooby either though, just different!

I've had my Sti almost a year to the day and so far its cost me about 1900 quid.

But that includes fuel and insurance

But I've also spent 1700 quid on mods

I didn't think to include insurance , was bad enough before, worse since the loss of the WR1 - it is really not a good idea to start adding up what you spend on cars!

I spent about 5 grand on my classic in a period of 12 months!

I then bought a P1 and in 18 months the only money i spent was for new tyres. The P1 needed no modding (prodrive are better at it than me) and it was 100% reliable.

Moral of this story, buy the best and then you don't have to waste money making it better!

im somewhere in the region of 7200 - 7500 on mods, servicing and insurance , but anybodys guess on fuel , not even had the car only had the car a year and a half from new (well 300 miles on the clock) got 21K on the clock now (thank goodness im only at home 6 months a year!)

but worth every penny
