Default Advice for possible new owner

Hi everyone,

I am looking for some advice on possibly owning a non turbo Scooby 2.0 Sport Estate, probably around a 1998 year to replace my wife's Corsa. Can any one give us some info on the following,

1. What is the car like generally as an everyday car in terms of comfort, economy and reliability?

2. Are there any tailgate bike racks available? I see they have a couple of spoilers on the rear and have read that this can be a problem with tailgate bike racks.

3. Anything we should look for when buying or be aware of?

4. What is the turbo version like in terms of fuel econemy and running costs? Our other car is a Lotus Elise and so we don't want our everyday car to be a fuel guzzler and to cost a lot to service and maintain.

Any advice on the above and more will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

just done the very same.

1. good. comfort better due to driving position. estate has plenty of room. UK turbo is much cheaper on the insurance (not much dearer than corsa!!!) Loads of room for the kids and shopping.
Handling not the same as BMW for pointyness but much better than corsa, grip is very good.
car feels very long though even compared to our long wheel base frontera so harder to judge parking.

2. dunno

3. can not help there

4. fuel about the same a the 1.6 16v + K&N/exhaust'd corsa if driven normally, you don't need to rag it as the speed is there at much less revs.
Takes off like a rocket when it's needed to but needs to spool (if thats the right word) the turbo up 1st before it "gets off" so not instant as a big CC engine IMO.
Running costs probably gonna be OK, plenty of parts about and specialist garages.
Service, on a car that old, you can do your own I would have thought - I will be unless there's anything technical I don't know about.

Thanks JohnHamer1977. Were you referring to the Turbo or non turbo version as I am looking at non-turbo at the moment.

The 1996 P reg UK Turbo 2000 estate
This is my GF's in this post https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...ml#post6546608

My dad had a 1.8 non-turbo. The fuel economey was not any better than my GF's car (but my GF doesn't drive it "on boost" a lot) the harder your drive the fuel consumption will get a lot worse, I know that's obvious but it's an exagerated effect with the Turbo.

I would say my GF's old Corsa was thirsty for a Corsa, I put that down to the K&N and stupidly big exhaust though - plus the fact it was driven at higher revs.
So overall there's not much between the 2.

A friend has an Impreza Sport (Which is a 2 litre non-turbo) and I can get more MPG out of my turbo than his NA Sport. Off boost its just like any other 2 litre car but it will be more thirsty having to lug the 4WD around.

Servicing for me is at a local rally prep garage and the guy is ex subaru so know his onions. Get mine serviced minor in March £110 ish and Major in Sept £250 ish and last belt change was £280 plus service but didn't change plugs because I'd only done 6K in 12 months.

Not worth buying a sport IMO unless you can't get insurance. May as well get a nice straight wagon and smiles all round.
